Trump continues to turn the swamp into a cesspool. On Thursday, his transition team announced that it had officially hired Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to help assist Trump in “change to Washington.”
In a statement Bondi said:
“I’m honored to serve President-elect Donald J. Trump in making this historic transition and assisting in finding the best individuals to bring change to Washington on day one, grow our economy, protect our children and families, and be unafraid to stand up for Americans.”
Presumably the “change” the pair have in mind is more of the corruption they are known for.
Bondi, readers might recall, is the woman Trump was recently fined by the IRS for what looks an awful like like bribery.
The scrutiny centered around a $25,000 check that the Donald J. Trump Foundation sent to Bondi’s political fundraising committee in 2013. Critics said the donation looked like an attempt to sway Bondi’s office not to take legal action against the now-defunct Trump University.
It gets worse:
Trump held a lavish fundraiser at his Mar-a-Lago resort for Bondi after she decided not to proceed with the case. It did not stop there. The Huffington Post reports: “In addition to the $25,000 donation from his foundation and the star-studded Mar-a-Lago event, Trump and his daughter Ivanka each gave $500 to Bondi’s campaign in the fall of 2013. The following spring, Ivanka and her father donated another $125,000 to the Republican Party of Florida ― Bondi’s single biggest source of campaign funds.”
Bondi has always insisted that her massive payday from Trump didn’t affect her ability to give him a free pass in his Trump University scam. Her tepid defense convinced roughly zero people. (Trump would later all but admit that Trump U was a con job by paying tens of millions to make the fraud trial in New York go away. A $25,000 check to the right woman to avoid a similar fate in Florida seems like a steal.)
Also, following Trump’s apparent desire to name only the very worst people to his transition team, Bondi’s awfulness is multi-faceted. She’s also a homophobe. When not defending herself against charges of accepting bribes from Trump, she has had to defend herself against charges of spending her career viciously blocking gay rights. Just days after the mass shooting in a gay night club in Orlando, CNN’s Anderson Cooper publicly tore Bondi a new one over her life-long homophobia.
“I talked to a lot of gay and lesbian people here yesterday who are not fans of yours and said that they thought you were being a hypocrite, that you for years have fought—you’ve basically gone after gay people, said that in court that gay people simply by fighting for marriage equality were trying to do harm to the people of Florida.”
She defended her actions by saying she was simply doing her job to uphold the laws of her state. The same laws she seemed to overlook by ignoring Trump’s fraud. Strange…
Trump’s choice in picking Bondi proves two things:
- He doesn’t care about placing competent people to his staff so long as the incompetent ones are subservient to him.
- And there is no level of corruption Donald Trump won’t stoop too. Right in front of our faces.
