Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s first foray into mainstream American politics was back in 2011, when he led the charge to spread the racist lie that President Obama was not born in the United States. However, he has seen that in America, outside of the bigoted GOP base, such conspiracy theories don’t fly. So, Trump has taken a different strategy to deal with this recurring question: he refuses to speak on the issue.
Well, that is a problem the closer we draw to Election Day, and Trump’s surrogates have been repeatedly asked if Donald Trump has finally admitted that birtherism is a racist lie. Trump mouthpieces like his campaign manager Kellyanne Conway and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani have been all over the news shows trumpeting the idea that Trump no longer believes in the birther conspiracy, but we’ve yet to hear that from Trump’s own lips. Well, once again, Trump was given the chance in an interview with the Washington Post that was printed Thursday evening to say that he no longer believes President Obama wasn’t born in Hawaii, and again Trump blew it. He told WaPo’s Robert Costa:
“I’ll answer that question at the right time. I just don’t want to answer it yet.”
Being a good reporter, Costa pushed and asked about his campaign manager’s assertions that he is no longer a birther. Trump’s only answer was this:
“It’s okay. She’s allowed to speak what she thinks. I want to focus on jobs. I want to focus on other things.”
You can’t pivot on this one, Donny. You spent months upon months publicly worrying over the first black president’s birth certificate, origins, and life prior to his entering the White House. You relished in ginning up racism in the GOP’s ignorant and bigoted base, and now you want millions of people of color around the nation to elect you as our next president and commander-in-chief of our military, when you won’t even admit that your racist conspiracy charge against the sitting president never should have happened?
Well, think again. That’s not going to happen. Either admit that Barack Obama was born in the United States of America, that he is an American citizen and a legitimate president, or get out of this race. You have proven time and again that you’ve no business running for the highest office in this land, and you continue to do so every day.
