Donald Trump continues to prove his mastery over the puppet strings of his loyal supporters, this time by insulting them to their faces while they cheer him on.
On Friday, during a “Thank You Tour” in Orlando, Florida, the president-elect proudly boasted about how insane his supporters were for him during the election season.
“You people were vicious, violent, screaming, ‘Where’s the wall? We want the wall!’ Screaming, ‘Prison! Prison! Lock her up!’ I mean you are going crazy. I mean, you were nasty and mean and vicious and you wanted to win, right?’ said Trump, speaking from an outdoor stage at the Florida fairgrounds.”
During the campaign, Trump would regularly call for his followers to use physical violence against protesters. During one incident at an Iowa campaign rally, Trump told his fans to “knock the crap” out of protesters and offered to cover their legal fees.
Trump also encouraged “lock her up” chants at his rallies while promising to put his opponent, Hillary Clinton, in prison. Although Trump later casually admitted that he lied about prosecuting Clinton to win votes.
And while the president-elect’s description of his supporters painted them as ruthless fanatics, he insisted that that was all behind them and that they were “mellow” now.
“But now, you’re mellow and you’re cool and you’re not nearly as vicious or violent, right? Because we won, right? Now you’re sort of laying back … you’re basking in the glory of victory.”
Despite Trump’s proclamation of civility among his supporters post-election, nothing could be further from the truth, as day after day reports of hate crimes involving Trump supporters flood news coverage.
The Southern Poverty Law Center reported that from November 9 to November 19 there were at least 867 confirmed cases of harassment and intimidation carried out, many with the aggressors invoking Trump.
There have also been numerous reports of violent attacks by self-proclaimed Trump fans following the presidential election, that include everything from bomb plots to assault on religious and racial minorities.
And since the beginning of his campaign Trump has regularly led the attack against that which he labeled the “dishonest media” anytime something he said or did was criticized, scrutinized, or questioned by the press.
During the Orlando rally, CNN reported that one of Trump’s “mellow” supporters threw an empty water bottle at a reporter while calling him “trash.” Trump addressed the media at the rally, pointing to them and telling his followers, “these very dishonest people here.”
“They’ve written very dishonestly about all of us,” he added.
On two occasions during his speech, Trump’s supporters broke out chants of “lock her up,” which prompted Trump to smile slyly and say, “Oh that’s so terrible.”
