Shocking news out of Iran – according to Tasnim News Agency the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said Republican leaders wanted the American prisoners held until after the U.S. presidential election.
In the course of the talks for exchanging prisoners, the Republican rivals of the current US administration who claim to be humanitarians and advocates of human rights sent a message telling us not to release these people (American prisoners) and continue this process (of talks) until the eve of US presidential elections.
The remarks were made at a rally celebrating the 37th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution’s victory, the news source says. If the remarks are factual, they certainly shouldn’t come as a surprise. The January 16 prisoner swap stirred outrage among conservatives in the country. The GOP’s presidential candidates were surely not silent about the deal.
Donald Trump criticized the swap as not sounding “too good” because we released seven Iranian prisoners while we only received four Americans in the deal.
Mike Huckabee, who has since dropped out of the race, said they had been in Iran “several years too long.” Clearly he hadn’t checked in with his fellow Republicans to know which talking points were the right ones, as it seems some of the conservatives wished for them to be held just a little longer.
Fellow drop-out Chris Christie got the memo though when he said, “When this president makes trades this is a big problem. This is not a guy I would let negotiate buying a car for me let alone anything else.”
Their outrage was disgraceful then and if the Iranian official’s remarks are true, it’s even more disgraceful now. His comments indicate the GOP may have been more outraged that they couldn’t take a page from their 1970s playbook when the Iranian hostages were freed a mere 20 minutes after President Reagan’s inaugural address.
It’s terribly sad that Republicans continue their same old tricks of placing politics over patriotism. We’ve seen it time and time again. They wrap themselves in Old Glory and sing “God Bless America” while making backroom deals. This time, that deal is akin to the one made during the 1980 election.
Fortunately, the current deal didn’t work out quite so well for them and Americans weren’t subjected to a longer imprisonment for political gains.
