This Anti-Obama Meme Fails In More Ways Than You Can Count

Conservative thought is no longer represented by people like Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley — men who could make reasonable arguments, even though liberals might disagree with many of them. No, the 21st century has seen the death of conservative “intellectualism,” and jingoism, which has always been big in the conservative movement, has taken over. The latest fact-free anti-Obama meme from the group Tea Party Patriots is another example.

It’s interesting that the Tea Party Patriots chooses to pass judgement on President Obama’s record based on two things that are unconnected with each other. It’s also interesting that they choose to ignore years of private sector job growth, a stock market that has more than doubled since he took office, and all of the other accomplishments of his administration. They focus on only two things, and both of those things have the support of the majority of Americans.

“Enforces more gun control on law-abiding Americans.” The wording of this suggests that the president is enforcing the law. Which is exactly what the president is supposed to do, and what he is actually doing with his executive action on guns. Whatever happened to “Obama the lawless dictator?”

The president’s gun control proposals center around two things: 1) background checks, and 2) mental health services.

Polls are consistent: anywhere from 80 to more than 90 percent of Americans polled support expanded background checks for gun purchases. So the Tea Party is pitching the first part of this meme to that remaining 10 to 20 percent. A CNN poll found in January that 67 percent specifically approve of the president’s background check proposals.

Note to Tea Party — pitching your argument to one-third or less of the electorate is not a winning political strategy.

As for mental health services? Who is it that is always saying that the problem isn’t with guns, it’s with mental health? It’s people like NRA Vice President Wayne LaPierre:

We have no national database of these lunatics… We have a completely cracked mentally ill system that’s got these monsters walking the streets.

So what did congressional Republicans do in response to a proposal that is supported by the vast majority of Americans, and another that they themselves have called for? They threatened to take action against the president through use of the appropriations process.

According to the conservative site The New American, President Obama’s executive order on immigration gave amnesty to over 600,000 undocumented immigrants who met certain conditions. Again, the Tea Party is trying to make political points by opposing something that is supported by a majority of Americans: immigration reform.

But President Obama’s actions on guns and immigration pale in comparison to those of another president. That president banned the sale of machine guns and automatic weapons. He also signed a bill requiring background checks for handgun purchases. And he lobbied for the assault weapons ban that was passed after he left office.

As for immigration, that president signed a bill that granted amnesty to some 2.7 million undocumented immigrants. Who was that dastardly, America-hating, gun-hating, immigrant-loving lefty?? This guy, shown in a “happy birthday” post from 2015 on the Tea Party Patriots website:
