Friday morning, President Obama sent out a directive to all public schools that they should let transgender students use the bathroom of the gender they identify with. In other words, leave them kids alone! But shortly after the news of the directive broke on Thursday, Texas ran screaming to the media to declare their intent to sue for the right to discriminate against children:
Just hours after news outlets reported on the directive, which will be sent to all public schools across the country Friday, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick offered a doomsday outlook.
“This will be the beginning of the end of the public school system as we know it,” he told NBC 5.
Clearly, Texas schools teach Hysterical Hyperbole 101. According to the Washington Post, Patrick is the same “leader” that is trying to get the Fort Worth superintendent to quit because he didn’t want to treat transgender teens like pariahs. What a real humanitarian.
Patrick’s boss, Governor Greg Abbott is also gung ho to fight against the tyranny of letting transgender kids pee in peace:

Even Texas’ Attorney General, Ken Paxton is fired up and ready to go:

Remember, all this hand wringing and drama is about tormenting transgender teens in the pursuit of “protecting” other teens from the terrifying specter of….something. No one is really sure. While Republicans claim that transgender equality will allow men to dress up as women to spy on little girls in public bathrooms, it’s not entirely clear what they think will happen if schools are transgender friendly. Perhaps teenage boys will pretend to be girls so they can sneak a peek? And that would be worth the harassment and bullying they’d receive? Does anyone actually believe that would happen?
At least one school superintendent does:
“I got news for President Barack Obama,” Port Neches-Groves (Texas) Superintendent Rodney Canvass told 12News. “He ain’t my President and he can’t tell me what to do. That letter is going straight to the paper shredder. I have 5 daughters myself and I have 2,500 girls in my protection. Their moms and dads expect me to protect them. And that is what I am going to do. Now I don’t want them bullied… but there are accommodations that can be made short of this. He is destroying the very fiber of this country. He is not a leader. He is a failure.”
Because words no longer have meaning for conservatives, “protect” has become a word of violence against the transgender community and the mundane act of going to the bathroom to pee has become an act of aggression.
There’s a deep sickness in the American right wing and it’s created an atmosphere where bullying transgender people is acceptable. That more transgender teens will commit suicide doesn’t matter to conservatives. The only thing they care about is the “right” to discriminate against someone. Because without someone for the right to step on, how will they feel better about themselves?
