On Monday evening, CNN presented Anderson Cooper’s interview with Donald Trump’s wife, Melania. Mrs. Trump has been
in hiding out of the public eye for a number of weeks after getting caught plagiarizing Michelle Obama at the Republican National Convention. But the campaign brought her out to address the controversy surrounding the Access Hollywood video and the subsequent statements from multiple women that Trump did to them the same sort of things he described to Billy Bush.
The interview was largely a waste of time. Melania told Cooper that her husband’s accusers were liars and that he had been “egged on” by Bush to say the things he said. Of course, none of that is news — everyone knew that Mrs. Trump certainly wasn’t coming out of her exile to criticize her spouse.
Leave it to Stephen Colbert to offer up an interview with Melania Trump that is far more honest and much more entertaining than the real thing. On Tuesday’s Late Show, Colbert spoke via satellite with his “Melania Trump,” played by Laura Benanti.
“Melania” tells Colbert that she doesn’t want to talk about herself. She wants to talk about important things, like how the election is being “rigged.” Colbert asks, “Who’s rigging it?”
Benanti/Melania looks off camera for a moment, apparently toward the coach she said wasn’t present, and says,
“The left wing media, international bankers, and Billy Bush.”
Colbert responds by asking if she doesn’t blame her husband for what he said. “Yes I do,” Melania replies. She continues,
“I said to my husband that those words are very inappropriate. Plus, he said them on a bus. Disgusting.”
“Have you forgiven your husband?” Colbert wants to know.
“Ooh, yes,” Melania says, looking again at the supposedly non-existent coach. “Yes, yes, apparently, because he explained it was ‘locker room talk.'”
But the best part of the interview comes at the end. That’s when Benanti’s Melania lets it be known who she really thinks should be president. And you can’t help but wonder if, somewhere deep inside, the real Melania might just agree with her.
