In a move that’s not so reminiscent of the past year, Senate Democrats are backing up Obama’s potential decision to act unilaterally on immigration reform through executive action. In a letter sent Monday and signed by six top Democratic officials in the Senate, Obama has been informed that he has the strong support of Senate Democrats.
Democrats strongly support executive action
The letter, addressed Nov. 17 and bearing the letterhead of the United States Senate and Harry Reid, explained that after recognizing that Republicans would refuse to act on immigration reform, Democrats were ready to back up the President if he took executive action on the issue. Portions of the letter went a little something like this:
“We strongly support your plan to improve as much of the immigration system as you can within your legal authority, and will stand behind you to support changes to keep families together while continuing to enforce our immigration laws in a way that protects our national security and public safety.”
Well, it’s about time guys. Oh, and girls. Patty Murray was one of the signatories. The others were Reid himself, Dick Durbin, Bob Menendez, Chuck Schumer and Michael Bennet. All except Murray and Reid were part of the ‘Gang of Eight’ last year who were pushing for and penned the immigration bill from the Senate.
Democrats running away from Obama
The letter from Senate Democrats will undoubtedly be a breath of fresh air to both President Obama and Democrats across the country. This is due to the fact that many Democrats tried to distance themselves from the President prior to the 2014 midterm elections. The Washington Post even asked, prior to election night, whether running away from the President would work.
Their conclusion? “It rarely works.” Turns out they were right. Democrats suffered crippling defeats throughout the country. I guess that’s what happens when you distance yourself from a president who has lowered unemployment from 10% to 5.9%, killed Osama, saved the housing and auto industries, cut the deficit in half, presided over a stock market gain from 7,000 to 17,000, gotten us out of Afghanistan and our troops off the ground in Iraq, had countless months of continuous job growth, and is an all around friendly fella!
Welcome back Democrats!
Well, we should have all been a little perturbed at the Senate Democrats. After all, they pretty much abandoned us in the slim hope that they could retain their seats. Can we really stay mad at them, though? I mean, after all, it’s not as if they’re doing this to get reelected. That ship has come and gone.
Sure, they helped hand over the country to the Republicans for two years, but they have now recognized their mistake. Regardless of what anyone says, it’s better late than never. At least they’re trying to make sure something gets done on their way out. Sort of like the last heroic push from a dying gladiator. Except they don’t look nearly as cool.
Hey Senate, who says you can’t come home?[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abzbVFuxigg]
