The women’s liberation movement caused the Ferguson riots. Yep. Women’s lib. Thus sayeth Dr. Ben Carson, former pediatric neurosurgeon and one of the religious right’s leading lunatics. Carson appeared on American Family Radio’s “Today’s Issues” show, speculating about what went wrong between Michael Brown and former police officer Darren Wilson.
Carson said, specifically:
Certainly in a lot of our inner cities, particularly in the black inner cities, where 73 percent of the young people are born out of wedlock, the majority of them have no father figure in their life. Usually the father figure is where you learn how to respond to authority. So, now you become a teenager, you’re out there, you have really no idea how to respond to authority, you eventually run into the police or you run into someone else in the neighborhood who also doesn’t know how to respond but who’s better than you are, and you get killed. Or you end up in the penal system. . . .
I think a lot of it really got started in the ’60s with the ‘me’ generation. ‘What’s in it for me?’ I hate to say it, but a lot of it had to do with the women’s lib movement. You know, ‘I’ve been taking care of my family, I’ve been doing that, what about me?’ You know, it really should be about us.
He thinks he’s preaching family values, and seems to think that proper family values will eradicate the problems that come with poverty, and with institutional racism. Ben Carson, however, also blamed Brown’s death on political correctness. Back in August, according to Right Wing Watch, he argued that political correctness distracted from real issues, like teen pregnancy. Because teen pregnancy means kids growing up in poverty, and without fathers, they don’t know how to respond to authority and end up getting killed, like Michael Brown.
First it was political correctness, and now it’s feminism. The real lesson, he claimed back then, was “teach your children to respect authority.” Of course, even to Ben Carson, the problem can’t be institutional racism. Institutional racism is what’s responsible for “guilty until proven innocent, especially if you’re black.” Police officers carry that mentality, many likely without realizing it, and it leads to excessive use of force against blacks — including murder.
Ben Carson, like all the other nutjobs on the religious right, doesn’t get it, because he can’t see past the lie that everyone has the same opportunities and choices available. He can’t get past the lie that black people are poor and targets of the police because they just made bad choices. It’s hard to understand how he could be so clueless, given his own background, but sadly, he is.
