Rick Santorum Appeared On The Rachel Maddow Show – You Can Pretty Much Guess How That Turned Out (VIDEO)

Rick Santorum appeared on The Rachel Maddow Show Wednesday night and it was a little like watching a high school student trying to out-serve Serena Williams. As you might imagine, the encounter didn’t go well for Santorum, who seems to have no idea how government works. Not surprisingly, the subject was gay marriage.

Santorum began the show by claiming that the American people have the final say, but as Republicans are oh so fond of reminding us, we live in a democratic republic, not a true democracy. What that means is that either directly or indirectly, we elect the people who appoint the people who have the final say: the Supreme Court.

He then suggested that Congress can pass a law that would override the Supreme Court, to which Maddow reminded him that no, they can’t. The only thing they can do is amend the Constitution.

They’re (the Supreme Court) ruling on the constitutionality of that law,” said Rachel.

“What if they’re doing it from an unconstitutional basis,” asked Santorum.

Maddow somehow remained cool-headed when she said, “they decide what’s constitutional.”

Santorum then went on to argue that he feels that Congress also has a right to decide what’s constitutional. “That’s called checks and balances,” he said.

Of course, Maddow pointed out that he was “fundamentally wrong on civics.”

It went on like that for the full eight plus minutes. Santorum was insistent that no matter what the Supreme Court ruled, Congress could pass anything they wanted. He said they could pass a ban on gay marriage if they wanted to and the president could sign it, although he did admit it could get struck down again.

It got even better when Maddow started quizzing Santorum over whether people choose to be gay – a question he tried to dodge, but he did say, “there are people who are alive today who identify themselves as gay and lesbian and who no longer are.” He even said that he doesn’t give it much thought, to which Maddow replied that he talks about it all the time.

Here’s the video. Grab the popcorn:

As amusing as it was watching Maddow bat him around like he’s a baby mouse to her cat, it’s frightening to know that a President Santorum could spend his presidency throwing darts at the Supreme Court in the form of unconstitutional laws, just hoping one would stick. Then, we can always console ourselves with the knowledge that he will never, ever be President.
