Almost as if someone blew a dog whistle only Republicans can hear, several of our more ignorant members of the GOP have come out declaring that their states will not accept any Syrian refugees this week. Thirteen governors (all Republican, I know HUGE shock right?) have said that they will not accept any refugees in their states in response to the Paris terror attacks.
If I said it once, I have said it a thousand times. Republicans, for all their bluster about loving the Constitution, have no freakin’ clue on the first thing about it in any way.
Think Progress explains:
The Supreme Court explained in Hines v. Davidowitz, ‘the supremacy of the national power in the general field of foreign affairs, including power over immigration, naturalization and deportation, is made clear by the Constitution.'”
Simply put, State governors do not have the power to unilaterally declare their state a “refugee free zone.” They just do not have the lawful power to do it. Full stop. One lone Democratic governor has joined the panic as well, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, after caving to demands from state Republicans.
Declarations like this, from the rabid right-wing and the Republicans who enable them are not really a surprise. There is a tsunami of Islamophobia washing over conservatives from coast to coast, wanting to blame literally any problem that exists on someone who is from the Middle East.
Ted Cruz, the son of an immigrant who was fleeing political and religious persecution, has said we should be profiling refugees on religion and accept only Christians. If Republicans’ ignorance of the Constitution was a circus, Ted Cruz would be the owner who also doubled as the Ring Leader. Trump said he would “strongly consider” shutting down mosques in America — what the hell does that even mean? Mike Huckabee has even demanded the new Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, block any legislation meant to help refugees to come here, or resign his post. I wonder how Ryan likes his new job.
President Obama trashed these attitudes recently in a statement he made on Monday:
When I hear folks say that, well, maybe we should just admit the Christians, but not the Muslims, when I hear political leaders suggesting that there would be a religious test for which person who’s fleeing from a war-torn country is admitted, when some of those folks themselves come from families who benefited from protection when they were fleeing political persecution, that’s shameful. That’s not American. That’s not who we are. we don’t have religious tests to our compassion.
Obama is 100 percent correct. ISIS wants us to deny entry to refugees, along with every other western nation. They want them gathered up in camps as easy targets for either recruitment or extermination. With no other options and nowhere to go, refugees will have no choice between join or die. Denying refugees any assistance is literally helping ISIS win. The irony here is that the Republican party is the one who constantly screams that Obama is helping the terrorists win, when they are the ones that have been doing it for decades.
