Donald Trump is toxic and dangerously unqualified to be our next president and leader of the free world. In fact, Trumpism has poisoned the GOP to the point where sane and principled Republicans are speaking out against Trump and even running to the polls to vote for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. On the final night of the show-stopping, star-studded event that was the Democratic National Convention, one such Republican hit the stage with a scathing indictment of Donald Trump and an endorsement of Hillary Clinton, complete with a push for other Republicans to join his efforts to stop Trump and elect Clinton.
This wasn’t just any Republican, though. It was Doug Elmets, who worked in Ronald Reagan’s White House. Elmets said of his decision and his reason for being there in Philadelphia on Thursday night:
I haven’t just voted Republican. I worked in President Reagan’s White House. I recently led an effort to place a statue of Ronald Reagan in California’s Capitol.
I’m here tonight to say: I knew Ronald Reagan; I worked for Ronald Reagan.
Elmets then paused and delivered in forceful tones the ultimate zinger:
Donald Trump, you are no Ronald Reagan!
Elmets’ speech was not just a slam on the GOP nominee, though. He took the Party he loves and their entire platform and plan for America to task, saying:
This year’s Republican platform is the most alarming I’ve ever seen. It’s laced with anti-immigrant, anti-gay, anti-women positions that do not represent the views of most Americans. That is why this year, I will vote for a Democrat for the first time.
Hopefully, other Republicans appreciate what this man is saying. He is doing what all good patriots do, and putting country before party. The GOP seriously needs to get their priorites in order if they want to survive as a viable, relevant political institution. They need to dump the Tea Party nuts, the religious extremists, and the culture warriors or they will soon be in the dustbin of history. They are are already in complete disarray.
If a man who proudly served in Ronald Reagan’s White House can do the right thing and vote for the candidate that is actually qualified rather than for an angry, ignorant, dangerously unqualified demagogue to lead this nation, then, by God, everyone else should be able to swallow their pride and put their differences aside and do the same.
