President Obama held a press conference regarding his executive order on guns. He started the conference by saying:
I want to be absolutely clear at the start, I believe in the second amendment. It’s there written on the paper—it guarantees the right to bear arms. No matter how many times people try to twist my words around—I taught constitutional law, I know a little about this. But I also believe we can find ways to reduce violence consistent with the second amendment.
In other words, this isn’t a gun grab. I repeat NOT. A. GUN. GRAB.
Ok, with that out-of-the-way, Obama then discussed measures that will be put into place that restrict gun sales and ownership to background check requirements, closing the gun show and online sales loophole. Additionally, his order will fund mental health care to further help prevent violence and suicide at the hands of the mentally ill.
No, this is not the end all, be all solution to the gun problem in the United States – but it is a starting point. The discussion must start somewhere and hopefully, the president’s actions today will be a catalyst for more work to be done.
There is a lot in the line and that couldn’t have been clearer than the moment the President of the United States teared up speaking about the children slaughtered with guns. He recalled the six-year-olds in Newtown, Connecticut who were killed with what should be considered a weapon of mass destruction. I mean seriously, when a person has the legal ability to walk into a school and massacre 20 first graders in a matter of minutes – it should be considered a weapon of mass destruction. Of course, gun-lovers will tell me otherwise in the comments. Those same gun-lovers will also say that this emotional moment was “put-on” and not allow it to impact them at all.
While they mock, truly listen to the tremble, listen to the tone of our leader. He still hurts over the loss of those children – and all the innocent lives lost because we cannot get our shit together and put in place some common sense regulations around guns.
You’re right, ammosexuals. Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. And it’s about damn time we start looking at the people who are buying the guns because there is a chance they will want to kill people.
