Did you know that Mike Pence isn’t just a raging homophobe who believes in using electroshock therapy to convert gay teens into heterosexuals, but that he’s also a sniveling coward? It’s true! Just ask Mike Pence, who one day after learning that Donald Trump is a proud sexual assaulter of women, decided his course of action was to pretend Trump was taking things seriously.
In a statement released roughly 20 hours after leaked audio of Trump bragging to a television host about forcing himself onto women who couldn’t stop him because he’s a “celebrity,” Pence managed to convey an astonishing amount of cowardice:
As a husband and father, I was offended by the words and actions described by Donald Trump in the eleven-year-old video released yesterday. I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them. I am grateful that he has expressed remorse and apologized to the American people. We pray for his family and look forward to the opportunity the has to show what is in his heart when he goes before the nation tomorrow night [for the 2nd presidential debate].
Privately, sources close to Pence describe him as “beside himself” and his wife “furious.” In his statement, he makes no mention of abandoning Trump.
It’s unclear how Pence thinks Trump will “show what is in his heart” on the debate stage. In fact, we can expect him to do just the opposite. Donald Trump has a five decade legacy of assaulting, smearing and objectifying women. Some of his earliest acquaintances immediately picked up on the problematic relationship Trump had to the women he met.
“Donald was extremely sensitive to whether or not the women he invited to campus were pretty,” recalled George White, a fellow student in the class of 1964.
“For Donald,” he added, “it’s display.”
His efforts earned him the title “Ladies Man” in the school yearbook.
The next 50 years would be a series of sexual assault accusations, affairs, and ugly public fights with women Trump had no problem smearing as “pigs” and “dogs.”
So the question for Pence is, “Do you really think a 70-year-old man with a lifetime of sexist, aggressive behavior towards women behavior is capable of – in the next 36 hours or so – changing that outlook completely?” And if so, then are you interested in a bridge I have for sale in Brooklyn?
It, of course, would not be easy for Mike Pence to torch his chances at the White House by abandoning Trump now. But doing the right thing is seldom easy. Ironically, Pence’s reaction to the tape shows his character in much the same way the tape itself showed Trump’s. He’s a political opportunist. A coward. And little more.
