It seems that Oprah Winfrey might be on the cusp of shocking the world and giving Donald Trump fits in 2020. During an interview with Bloomberg Media‘s David Rubenstein, Winfrey was asked if she’s reconsidering a presidential run in the wake of Trump’s victory.
“Have you ever thought that, given the popularity you have—we haven’t broken the glass ceiling yet for women—that you could actually run for president and actually be elected?” he asked.
Winfrey said that before the election she’d “never considered the question, even a possibility.” But after witnessing Trump’s upset victory, “I just thought, ‘Oh… oh?’”
Rubenstein said, “Because, it’s clear you don’t need government experience to be elected president of the United States.”
She responded: “That’s what I thought. I thought, ‘Oh gee, I don’t have the experience, I don’t know enough’… And now I’m thinking—Oh.”
This coy answer may be nothing much to get all excited about. It’s highly unlikely that Winfrey would run for office, but then again Trump is the president. Trump’s actions so far have been so outrageously un-American and dangerous that people like Oprah, who have said they’d never run for office, may revisit that position as he continues to do serious damage.
Looking at Winfrey, it’s easy to dismiss her as another TV personality using her popularity to gain votes. But consider what Oprah’s accomplished in her career. She’s worked her way up from humble beginnings to becoming one of the wealthiest and most recognizable women in the world. On top of that, she’s probably interviewed hundreds of influential people, including presidents and other prominent political figures. And she’s done shows on just about every political issue that we discuss today.
Oprah is far more likely to be far more knowledgeable about Trump’s job than he is, plus she has four years to learn even more.
According to PBS, in 2011, Winfrey’s show averaged around 48 million viewers per week. Advertisers paid an average of 1 million dollars for a 30-second spot on her finale. Her show ran in about 150 countries. And around 80 million homes carried her OWN network.
Here’s a breakdown of the demographics who visited her website in February.
There seems to be a lot of Trump voters in those numbers.
While Trump enjoyed modest success with his reality TV show, his ratings assuredly pale in comparison to Winfrey’s show which didn’t just attract more people but also changed American culture. There are undoubtedly a lot more qualified political figures who could challenge Trump in 2020. However, wouldn’t it be sweet revenge for the media if the Queen of all Media was the one to topple Trump?
After 2016, we can never say never again.
