File this under “News most likely to send Donald Trump into a rage spiral.” Oprah Winfrey, the legendary media mogul whose celebrity is rivaled only by her efforts to give back, has officially endorsed Hillary Clinton for President.
At the red carpet premiere for her new television show, Greenleaf, Oprah told reporters that she’s throwing her support behind Clinton because this was an “seminal” moment.
I really believe that is going to happen,” said Winfrey, 62. “It’s about time that we make that decision.”
“Regardless of your politics, it’s a seminal moment for women,” she continued. “What this says is, there is no ceiling, that ceiling just went boom! It says anything is possible when you can be leader of the free world.
Oprah Winfrey knows a thing or two about shattering glass ceilings. An African-American woman from Chicago breaking into the television business in the 1980s and 90s was no small feat. Instead of letting the roadblocks get to her, she became one of the most recognizable and powerful celebrities in the world. Now, Oprah oversees a vast media empire. And she’s one of the richest people in the world for her troubles.
While wealth should not be, in and of itself, considered a show of good character, the contrast between Donald Trump and Oprah is stark. Trump has always hung his reputation on the idea that he is very rich. Much of his campaign has been built around bragging about how financially successful he is (or says he is). Oprah, on the other hand, is known for giving money, not having it. Her history of philanthropic enterprises is legendary. She’s also never forgotten where she came from or what it’s like to not have much.
Trump, whose contempt for the poor is matched by his contempt for women (including the one he is running against), cannot be more different. Stingy, self-serving, and shallow, Donald Trump has repeatedly avoided opportunities to give back. In the aftermath of 9/11, Trump had his wealthy friends give money to his namesake charity, while – records show – he kept his own in the bank. When he raised millions for veterans, he neglected to give the money to them until a newspaper finally called him out on it. His infamous greed has earned him the moniker: The least charitable billionaire in the world.
The fact that a strong black rich woman is throwing her support behind Clinton over Trump only highlights the fact that for many – rich and poor – Trump is viewed as a hateful, bigoted fraud. Oprah Winfrey clearly sees that.
