GOP obstructionist Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT) have already weighed in on President Obama’s choice to replace outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder. Their stance should not be surprising: They want to know whether Loretta Lynch considers executive amnesty legal and constitutional. Chances are, if she gives them anything other than a resounding, unequivocal “NO!” they’ll refuse to confirm her, and do everything they can to block her.
Loretta Lynch faces tough questions from the Senate, which was par for the course when confirming presidential nominees, even before the election (and especially with this President). According to the Daily Caller, Ted Cruz said:
“The Attorney General is the President’s chief law enforcement officer. As such, the nominee must demonstrate full and complete commitment to the law. Loretta Lynch deserves the opportunity to demonstrate those qualities, beginning with a statement whether or not she believes the President’s executive amnesty plans are constitutional and legal.”
Loretta Lynch does deserve that opportunity, but we can be certain that unless she answers questions about amnesty in exactly the way that Sens. Cruz and Lee want, they’ll find ways to make sure she never gets confirmed, leaving the U.S. without an attorney general for who knows how long (like they’ve left us without a surgeon general). Ted Cruz and Mike Lee are two of the six senators that sent a letter to outgoing Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) about amnesty, which said, in part:
“We write to express our alarm with President Obama’s announced intention to take unilateral executive action by the end of this year to lawlessly grant amnesty to immigrants who have entered the country illegally.
As majority leader of the Senate, you have the responsibility of not only representing the citizens of your State, but also of protecting the Constitution through vigilant exercise of the checks and balances provided under the Constitution.”
The letter, which Sens. Mike Crapo, Pat Roberts, David Vitter and Jeff Sessions also signed, promises assistance, but only if Reid blocks any executive action that Obama might decide to take on immigration. The also called amnesty “lawless,” and threatened to use “all procedural means to return the Senate” to its proper focus on resolving this “constitutional crisis.”
Much of the right-wing media denounced Eric Holder’s view on amnesty, because he called it a civil and human right. What Cruz, Lee, and others will look for from Loretta Lynch will be for her to say something like, “Amnesty is unequivocally wrong, and I will do everything in my power to stop the president from continuing to violate the Constitution. You have my solemn word.” And then they’ll block her anyway because they think she lied.
She’s clearly in for a very difficult ride. Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and others, will grill her until they either have what they want, or until they’ve decided she won’t give them what they want. Obstruction at its finest.
