President Obama’s message is abundantly clear: Staying home on election day rather than voting, or casting your ballot for a third party candidate, is the same as voting for Donald Trump.
The president appeared on Wednesday’s edition of the Steve Harvey Morning Show and he urged voters, particularly black voters, to show up on election day and vote for Hillary Clinton.
“If you don’t vote, that’s a vote for Trump,” said Obama. “If you vote for a third-party candidate who’s got no chance to win, that’s a vote for Trump. So the notion somehow that, ‘Well, you know, I’m not as inspired because Barack and Michelle, they’re not on the ballot this time, and, you know, maybe we kind of take it easy’ — my legacy’s on the ballot. You know, all the work we’ve done over the last eight years is on the ballot.”
Obama has become a powerful surrogate for Clinton on the campaign trail and has been pushing African-American voters not to be complacent when it comes to November’s election.
“I will consider it a personal insult — an insult to my legacy — if this community lets down its guard and fails to activate itself in this election,” said earlier this month at an event hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus.
In the interview with Harvey, Obama praised Clinton’s stellar performance in the first presidential debate, where she wiped the floor with the GOP nominee. The president said Hillary “is capable, tough, does her homework, cares about the same things I care about.”
“And then on the other side, you’ve got Mr. Trump, who is unqualified, doesn’t do his homework, doesn’t know basic facts that you need to know if you’re going to be president,” he added.
Obama also slammed Trump for his disgusting fat-shaming of a former Miss Universe title holder. The president said that anyone who would judge someone based on their looks rather than “the content of their character … is not somebody I want in the Oval Office that my daughters are listening to and that sons are listening to.”
“Across the board, you’ve got somebody who appears to only care about himself,” he said.
