In 2008, then-candidate Barack Obama promised us change. The road has been rocky at times. Congress made it its mission to obstruct at every possible avenue, and obstruct they did.
Still, sometimes without the help of Congress, he’s:
- Taken us from the deep Bush recession to a period of growth and relatively low unemployment.
- Allowed the uninsured to purchase affordable insurance.
- Given us diplomacy instead of war.
- Defended, through executive actions, the civil rights of voters and of LGBT people.
I could go on, but his latest move is truly groundbreaking. His administration has hired an openly transgender person.
Raffi Freedman-Gurspan, formerly of the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), was appointed as Outreach and Recruitment Director for Presidential Personnel in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel.
“Raffi Freedman-Gurspan demonstrates the kind of leadership this administration champions,” Valerie Jarrett, senior adviser to President Obama, told the Washington Blade. “Her commitment to bettering the lives of transgender Americans, particularly transgender people of color and those in poverty, reflects the values of this administration.”
Freedman-Gurspan’s job will be to help oversee the hiring process for presidential appointments and to recruit candidates for all the departments and agencies in the federal government. Not only is she transgender, but Freedman-Gurspan is a woman of color, so we can be assured that hiring practices will be fair to many.
During her tenure at the National Center for Transgender Equality, Freedman-Gurspan focused on the experiences of transgender people of color and those living in poverty. Among her duties was advocacy on behalf of improving the conditions of transgender people in prison, addressing biased policing against transgender communities, limiting the use of detention for undocumented transgender immigrants and finding solutions to address violence against transgender communities of color.

While the President only has about 17 months left in his administration, I’m sure we can look forward to him continuing to shake things up. Now let’s sit back and see conservatives’ heads explode. Well, they already are if you want to look at the comments section of this Washington Times article.
