President Obama called out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday over the main conservative
line of bullshit talking point when it comes to the SCOTUS block, pointing out what really should be blatantly obvious when it comes to letting the people decide who should make the nomination: The American people already did decide, and they decided on Obama.
During an interview with NPR’s Nina Totenberg, the President laid into senate Republicans who have vowed to block anyone he nominates for the Supreme Court to fill the seat left vacant by the unexpected death of Justice Antonin Scalia.
One of the most puzzling arguments that I’ve heard from [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell and some other Republicans is this notion that the American people should decide. We should let the American people decide as part of this election, who gets to fill this seat. Well, in fact the American people did decide — back in 2012 when they elected me president of the United States with sufficient electoral votes.
President Obama then went on to condemn conservatives for failing to do their job by holding a fair hearing and giving a simple up or down vote for his nominee, Judge Merrick Garland.
And they also decided that the Republicans would be in the majority. They didn’t say we’re going to decide that you are going to be in charge for three years and then in the last year you all take a break. They say ‘No, you’re the president for four years and Mr. McConnell you’re going to be the leader because we’ve given you a Majority in the Senate.’
Obama announced on Wednesday, during a rose garden event, that he was nominating Garland to fill the empty seat on the Supreme Court. Almost immediately, Mitch McConnell reiterated the promise of he and his GOP cronies to refuse to even meet with Garland, let alone hold a hearing, citing the nonexistent Biden rule and insisting that the people should get to “have a voice.”
Obama just smashed this argument to smithereens by pointing out the truth. The American people decided not only once, but twice…and Obama was our decision. We the people chose Obama to hold the privilege of nominating justices to the highest court in the land. As he said on Wednesday, he has done his job. “Now, it is time for the senate to do theirs.”
