Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is embroiled in yet another controversy today and this time it has to do with his shady Trump Foundation. Over the weekend we learned that the self-proclaimed billionaire failed to register his charity in New York as one that solicits donations. This is a huge deal since we now know that the vast majority of the money in the foundation’s coffers are from donors, not Trump. Now we are learning that NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has issued a cease and desist order to the Trump Foundation.
The letter sent to the foundation from the AG’s office says:
Please take notice that the Donald J. Trump Foundation (“Trump Foundation”) is in violation of section 172 of Article 7-A New York’s Executive Law, which requires charitable organizations that solicit contributions in New York State to register with the Charities Bureau and to provide annual financial reports and annual audited financial statements…
Please take further notice that the Trump Foundation must immediately cease soliciting contributions or engaging in any other fundraising activities in New York….The failure immediately to discontinue solicitation and to file information and reports required under Article 7-A with the Charities Bureau shall be deemed to be a continuing fraud upon the people of the state of New York.
The Trump Campaign immediately tried to spin the order as politically motivated, spokeswoman Hope Hicks released a statement saying,”While we remain very concerned about the political motives behind AG Schneiderman’s investigation, the Trump Foundation nevertheless intends to fully cooperate fully with the investigation. Because this is an ongoing legal matter, the Trump Foundation will not comment further at this time.”
It’s typical for the Trump spin machine to blame others for their failure to follow the law and procedures. We have seen him do it time and again, but there is no wiggling out of this one. If Trump continues to solicit donations through the foundation he will be charged with fraud. We almost hope he ignores the cease and desist order.
