Republican frontrunner Donald Trump has had one blunder after another, despite the fact that he keeps winning. It has been said that he has just been playing a part, pandering to the racist and xenophobic right-wing base. Perhaps he really is just an *sshole, but what if it is more serious than that? What if he is suffering from a condition such as Alzheimer’s or dementia?
This possibility is not as far-fetched as you might think at first glance. In fact, this would actually explain a lot.
Earlier this month, while speaking to a crowd in Pittsburgh, Pa, Trump asked about Joe Paterno, and spoke of bringing him back. His campaign staff tried really hard to convince everyone that Trump was speaking of Paterno’s statue, but it was fairly obvious at the time that he had no idea whatsoever that the man was dead and had been dead for quite some time.
Then there was the time during the first debate in August 2015 when Trump said, “We need brain in this country to turn it around.” There is also the time he told Sean Hannity that he was going to shut down the “The Department of Environmental” when asked what government agencies he planned on getting rid of if he was elected president.
While it isn’t too hard to dismiss some of these instances as sheer stupidity and ignorance, it is harder to explain how Trump, a New Yorker, managed to screw up and mistakenly say 7/11 instead of 9/11 when talking about the terror attacks on the World Trade Center.
Regardless of the topic at hand, when Trump speaks he is damn near incoherent a whole lot of the time. For example, look at his answer when the Washington Post asked him if he would consider using a tactical nuclear weapon against ISIS.
TRUMP: I don’t want to use, I don’t want to start the process of nuclear. Remember the one thing that everybody has said, I’m a counterpuncher. Rubio hit me. Bush hit me. When I said low energy, he’s a low-energy individual, he hit me first. I spent, by the way, he spent 18 million dollars’ worth of negative ads on me. That’s putting [MUFFLED]…
POST: This is about ISIS. You would not use a tactical nuclear weapon against ISIS?
TRUMP: I’ll tell you one thing, this is a very good-looking group of people here. Could I just go around so I know who the hell I’m talking to?
Take a look back over what this man said. Take a good hard look at his words, his speech patterns, his struggle with basic grammar, his complete lack of syntax, and his total inability to just make sense period. This is a man that graduated from Wharton with a degree in economics, which means that at some point in time he was able to form a complete sentence. Yet, 90 percent of the time, nobody can even figure out what the hell he is talking about.
At this point, it has to be considered that maybe Trump isn’t just an *sshole. Alzheimer’s or dementia could be a very real possibility. Although at times it can be very difficult to discern the subtle differences between right-wing politics and neurodegenerative diseases, his speech patterns and behavior certainly fit the diagnosis.
As Salon explains: “The Alzheimer’s Association tells us that if two of the following core mental functions seem impaired then it is time to seek medical help: Memory, communication and language, ability to focus and pay attention, reasoning and judgment, visual perception. Alzheimer’s carries other symptoms besides memory loss including difficulty remembering newly learned information, disorientation, mood and behavior changes; deepening confusion about events, time and place; unfounded suspicions about family, friends and professional caregivers; more serious memory loss and behavior changes.”
The possibility that Trump may have dementia has been discussed before. Death and Taxes questioned this back in October and pointed out that Trump’s father received an Alzheimer’s diagnosis six years before he died. They also noted Trump’s aggressive late-night tweets, his childish behavior, his name-calling and mood swings.
The author of that article then suggested that Trump should be tested to prove that he has complete control of his mental faculties, which seems perfectly reasonable in my opinion. “Because if Trump can prove he’s not suffering from a degenerative neurological disorder that has left him with a damaged mind devoid of all shame or self-awareness, he might just be an asshole.”
