Maine Governor Paul LePage spoke on local radio WVOM and made the statement that this election isn’t about being Democrat or Republican but rather, “the elite vs. the average person.” He went on and on about how a billionaire (who is the furthest thing from an “average person” and someone who most of us would consider “the elite”) is somehow a man of the people, just because he hasn’t been part of Washington. That point, alone, is mind-boggling. I mean, how many gold toilets do YOU have in your house? What about gold walls? Yeah, NOTHING about Trump screams anything but “elite.”
Yet, that wasn’t the most perplexing thing to come out of LePage’s radio interview.
LePage’s comments continued to degrade into some of the most frightening words that could be spoken in the United States. He advocated for Donald Trump to wield “authoritarian power in our country” and actually said that our Constitution is broken.
“Sometimes, I wonder that our Constitution is not only broken, but we need a Donald Trump to show some authoritarian power in our country and bring back the rule of law because we’ve had eight years of a president, he’s an autocrat, he just does it on his own, he ignores Congress and every single day, we’re slipping into anarchy.”
Let this sink in for just a moment. Paul LePage was backed by Tea Party activists in Maine while he was up for election. The Tea Party principles, while often misguided, have ALWAYS claimed to be about “liberty” and “respecting the Constitution.” For goodness sake, they hijacked the Gadsden Flag which includes the line “Don’t Tread On Me” – a symbol that couldn’t be more anti-authoritarian!
Now, one of their darling governors is calling for fascism in America as the Tea Party turned alt-right flocks behind Donald Trump. Finally, honesty has arrived for the Teabaggers. For the longest time they hid behind the constitution while maintaining bigoted, racist, self-serving views. Now, they seem to just own it.
This freedom and liberty they speak of only really applies to right-wing white men and now they want their orange idol to be an authoritarian ruler. Everyone else can, well, in Donald Trump’s own words, “Go f*ck themselves.”
At least LePage confirms something many have been saying all along. Donald Trump is running a campaign that is extremely un-American. Authoritarianism is the furthest thing from the ideals of freedom and liberty, two things that are at extreme risk when electing someone like Trump (and men like LePage).
Not only are LePage’s words dangerous, they are twisted, considering in the same quote calling for Trump to be an authoritarian, he accuses President Obama of “ruling” this country, “doing it on his own” and ignoring Congress. None of those things are true, of course, but if they were, what kind of leader would that make President Obama?
So, which is it? Is President Obama “Dictator Obama” or has he allowed anarchy?
Never mind, we all know the answer. He is black.
