Democratic Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards urged both the Trump And Hillary presidential campaigns not to use the disaster in Louisiana as a campaign stop, or opportunity for a photo-op. Instead, Governor Edwards asked that the presidential campaigns give donations or offer to volunteer. Hillary listened, but Trump decided to show up… and with Play-Doh. Because nothing says helping those who just lost their home and possessions quite like a billionaire showing up with a crate of Play-Doh.
In any case, the Democratic governor was quite adamant in his opposition to President Obama coming to his disaster-stricken state for the time being. He swiftly shut down all the right-wing noise regarding Obama’s absence.
It is a major ordeal to have a president come to a disaster area, said Gov. Edwards in a statement:
We would have to take hundreds of local first responders, police officers, sheriffs, deputies and state troopers to provide security for that type of visit.
I would just as soon have those people engaged in the response rather than trying to secure the president. So I’d ask him to wait, if he would, another couple weeks.
The fact remains that a visit from President Obama would only hurt they clean up effort, as his visit with shut down interstates and siphon away much-needed manpower. Also, making empty and cynical PR stunts like Trump did when not necessary is exactly the type of the politics that Obama rejects. And what could Obama possibly do at this point? Is he going to show up with crates and jello snack packs. His job is to provide federal aid and resources to the state so they can best distribute it.
But that certainly hasn’t stop the mouth-foaming anti-Obama crowd from screaming about it, even making comparisons to the horrendously botched effort George Bush.
President Obama will surely go there in the coming days now that the state can devote the time and energy to it, but nothing can stop conservatives blind hatred of him.
