One of the worst things about Donald Trump’s running for President — besides that idea of him being President — is that he has stirred up the racists again. The people who came out from under their rocks when Barack Obama was elected have now stood upon those rocks and screamed “Trump!” They love that he wants to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. They embrace the idea of not allowing Muslims into the country. Trump has fed into those racist and xenophobic urges in a big way.
One of Trump’s biggest cheerleaders is a man we thought had crawled back into his bayou: David Duke. The former KKK leader and one-time gubernatorial candidate of Louisiana was practically jumping for joy on his radio show Wednesday, the day after Trump’s crowning as the presumptive Republican nominee. Trump, Duke insists, will “rehabilitate” the image of Hitler and defeat the “Jewish extremists” and “supremacists” who control the country. The Republican elites, Duke says, are working against Trump and himself (aw, poor baby) and are being financed by Jewish financiers. Listening to Duke, you understand why he was shunned decades ago and should be again:
The Trump campaign at a whole series of levels is a great opportunity for us to expose the people who really run the Republican Party, who run the Democratic Party, who run the political establishment and who are leading us all to disaster. Even though Trump is not explicitly talking about European-Americans, he is implicitly talking about the interests of European-Americans.
In other words, white supremacy, folks. Trump is purposefully appealing to “White America,” according to Duke’s guest, Kevin MacDonald. MacDonald is a neo-Nazi
historian fiction writer and a favorite guest of many a white supremacist broadcast. MacDonald agrees with Duke’s ranting that those darned Jewish extremists are crazy to oppose Trump…
… all they’re really going to be doing by doing a ‘Never Trump’ movement is exposing their alien, anti-American, anti-American-majority position…
Ah, there it is. If you don’t agree with the views of Duke and his neo-Nazi gang, you are “anti-American.” That’s okay, though, because Donald Trump will get you good. Trump will cleanse the country of the Jews, the Muslims, the Mexicans and anyone else who shows any more melanin than a jar of mayonnaise. But, Duke cautions, his listeners must do their part, too, and…
… make sure that Trump understands that we expect him to follow through on these things and we expect him to be our White Knight, our advocate and our person.
White Knight? Unfortunately, to people like Duke and MacDonald, a “White Knight” is not like the one from the old detergent add or an Arthurian tale. By using the term “White Knight,” Duke is invoking a definitive image, one that has been adopted by several neo-Nazi groups.
Make no mistake, David Duke and his neo-Nazi pals support Donald Trump for a very specific reason. They see Trump as their “savior,” their Hitler. This is an extremely dangerous result of Trump’s pre-eminence. We’ve already seen how this anti-Semitism has reared its ugly head in an attack on a journalist who dared criticize
Eva Braun Melania Trump.
The White Supremacists see an opportunity to take America back to the 18th century and they are pinning all their hopes on Trump. Their vision is based on Trump’s rhetoric, anti-immigrant stance and tacit approval of violence. We’ve seen this movie before, folks, and the ending is not happy.
