A bill currently in committee in Missouri would require a woman to get consent from the men who impregnated them before having an abortion as well as a 72-hour waiting period between requesting and undergoing the procedure.
In a moment of all-too-typical Republican ignorance, state lawmaker Rick Bratton (R) defended the measure, saying “it’s a child’s life that’s taken, the woman’s life is not altered.”
In an interview with Action News 41 on Thursday, Bratton said:
It took two to come together and create a child, and right now the way it is the woman gets the full say and the father gets no say, and I think that that needs to change. With the women’s movement for equal rights, well it’s swung so far we have now taken away the man’s right and the say in their child’s life.
Bratton obviously fails to understand that men don’t carry children. He also fails to understand that abortion comes with immense consequences for women, including physical and emotional turmoil no man could possibly fathom.
Bratton’s stupidity doesn’t stop there. He decided to hop on the ‘legitimate rape’ train earlier this month in an interview with Mother Jones:
Just like any rape, you have to report it, and you have to prove it, so you couldn’t just go and say, ‘Oh yeah, I was raped,’ and get an abortion. It has to be a legitimate rape… I’m just saying if there was a legitimate rape, you’re going to make a police report, just as if you were robbed.
No, you buffoon, statistically women do NOT report every rape. Sexual assault prevention experts have stated time and time again that the majority of rapes aren’t reported, as women fear they won’t be taken seriously or will be raked over the coals in court and in the press.
Thanks to Missouri for adding themselves to the growing list of red states intent on taking the rights of women and transferring them to rapists.
