Former Republican Secretary of State Colin Powell is one of the most respected men in the nation. He has been largely quiet throughout this presidential cycle as far as speaking publicly goes, but it appears that he has been saying a lot about Donald Trump via email, and those emails have now been hacked and are steadily being made public.
None of what is being hacked shows Secretary Powell saying anything good about Donald Trump. He calls his party’s nominee a “national disgrace” and an “international pariah.” One email, sent to journalist and former Powell aide Emily Miller on June 17, says that Trump is “is in the process of destroying himself.” Powell goes on to say, “No need for Dems to attack him. ”
Powell also blasted the fact that Trump’s first foray into politics was the infamous charge to lead the birther movement, in which he spent months upon months publicly worrying over President Obama’s birth certificate. Powell said of that in an August 21, 2016 email:
“Yup, the whole birther movement was racist. That’s what the 99% believe. When Trump couldn’t keep that up he said he also wanted to see if the certificate noted that he was a Muslim. As I have said before, ‘What if he was?’ Muslims are born as Americans everyday.”
Trump wasn’t the only person Powell referenced in the emails. He also said of House Speaker Paul Ryan:
“Paul Ryan is calibrating his position again.”
As for whether or not the emails are authentic? It appears that they are. Powell said that he was neither commenting nor denying what he wrote about Trump.
The thing is, more of the true feelings of GOP heavy hitters need to come out regarding Donald Trump. There’s no way any of these folks actually believe Trump is fit to be president, and there’s no way they are happy that this buffoon is carrying the banner of their party. The best thing they could do to save their party, and more importantly, this great country, is to pull all support and funding from Donald Trump, and show that they have even a little bit of integrity left. It will be interesting to see what else is leaked regarding the real feelings of top Republicans about their own nominee.
