Things are going from childish to embarrassing in the conservative movement’s attempts to stop transgender people from using public bathrooms. According to right-wing pundit Laura Ingraham, right-wingers are opting to wear diapers rather than face a trans person in the bathroom.
On Ingraham’s radio show, she noted that “a lot of people are going to be walking around with just Depends [adult diapers] from now on,” rather than just get over it. So not only can Target shoppers look forward to seeing raving bible-wavers screaming about sin, they can expect to smell them too. Yikes.
Oh we have a new transgender update for you as well. Oh no new transgender news for all of you who are bathroom-goers and public — you use public restrooms? I think a lot of people are going to be walking around with just Depends on from now on. They’re just not going to use the bathroom. Adult diapers, diapers for everybody. No one’s going to be going to the bathroom. You have little kids, there’s going to be no bathrooms. We’re just going to all wear Depends. Everyone will just be happy. Then you’ll be in your own bathroom. Everyone’s bathroom is just their own clothes, OK? So this is what we’re going to go to.
Defecating in your pants to spite trans people represents quite a bold statement about the health of the conservative movement. It’s also not entirely surprising considering the unhinged reaction to a fabricated problem. Ever since several major retailers made it a policy to allow members of the trans community to use whichever bathroom they feel comfortable with, there have been vocal critics to feign outrage.
Right-wingers, including high profile politicians like Sen. Ted Cruz, repeatedly floated the lie that said allowing trans people to use the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity posed a risk to America’s women and children. The theory was that men would begin dressing up as women to attack people in public restrooms. In reality, not a single instance of that happening has ever been found. Not one.
Instead, angry conservatives have actually made public bathrooms more dangerous. Designated hate group American Family Association once boasted that they had been or were planning to send men into women’s bathrooms to “test” how easy it was. (They later walked back this claim and simply meant they had “heard” of people doing it.) Several times in recent months, wannabe “patriots” verbally attacked restroom users whom they suspected of being trans. At many retailers around the country, deranged transphobic bigots can be seen, heard, (and now smelled) screaming in the faces of employees and customers because of the policy.
While it is certainly a right of every American to choose whether or not they want to wet themselves in the name of bigotry, I think it’s safe to say most retailers would rather they stay home to do it. Trans people welcome. Soiled adults clinging to a Bible and screaming about sin not so much.
