During the Nevada GOP Caucus, talk show host and comedian Jimmy Dore went to a Ted Cruz event in the Las Vegas suburb of Summerland. Dore interviewed perhaps the most intelligent Cruz supporter he could find and asked him about his thoughts on Obamacare.
Dore begins the video in his studio, describing the Cruz supporter he interviewed as a “salt of the earth-type guy,” making it clear that he held no animosity or personal dislike for the gentleman.
The voter begins by explaining how Cruz wants to repeal Obamacare and replace it with an interstate health care open market also known as Donald Trump’s “the lines around the states,” plan. The misinformed gentleman explains how he believes that market competition will drive down the costs of his health insurance premiums.
Dore points out that as soon as a Republican president opens up the interstate insurance market, insurers will automatically seek out the states with the least amount of consumer protections and regulations and most will concentrate in those states. In other words, it will become a race to the bottom, leaving the consumer with lower quality care and the corporations with more profit.
In other words, it will become a race to the bottom, leaving the consumer with lower quality care and the corporations with more profit.
At one point the Cruz supporter tries to blame Obamacare for his health insurance premium going up 60 percent within the two years before the Affordable Care Act was even passed. He blamed Obama for making the insurance companies “frontload” profits by raising premiums before the legislation become law. He then confessed that his premiums did not increase as rapidly after ACA became law.
This is a fascinating look into the mind of someone who has no idea that he’s voting against his own interests. It also reminds us that these voters are not necessarily bad people, but they do have a very warped view of the world and how things work. However, their misinformed mindset can become very dangerous should a large number of like-minded voters elect a Republican candidate who reinforces that worldview. Also, the last minute of the video will surprise you.
Here’s the video.
