Sunday night, President Obama told the American people that we do indeed suffer from a very real threat of terrorism, but that we will overcome it. “We will destroy ISIL and any other organization that tries to harm us,” Obama said.
By contrast, there are people who refuse to fight this war on terror. Congress, for example, wouldn’t even allow a debate on preventing people from buying weapons if they’re on the no-fly list. Marco Rubio, who doesn’t even bother to show up, said that the people on the no-fly list aren’t that dangerous. “The majority of the people on the No-Fly list are often times people who just basically have the same name as somebody else, who doesn’t belong on the No-Fly list,” he said on CNN’s State of the Union.
If that isn’t enough crazy for you, Liberty University president Jerry Falwell, Jr. gave his weekly address on December 4th, just two days after the shooting in San Bernardino. Like Mike Huckabee, Falwell believes more Americans should conceal carry guns to help “end those Muslims.” But wait… it gets worse:
It just blows my mind when I see the President of the United States say that the answer to circumstances like that is more gun control. If some of those people in that community centre had what I’ve in my back pocket right now…Is it illegal to pull it out?…I just wanted to take this opportunity to encourage all of you to get your permit. We offer a free course. Let’s teach them a lesson if they ever show up here.
That was the last straw for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Clinton who went to the rhetorical mattresses. “This is the kind of deplorable, not only hateful, response to a legitimate security issue, but it is giving aid and comfort to Isis and other radical jihadists,” she said.
Just two days later, Clinton was speaking to the Brooking’s Institute’s Saban Forum when she continued her thoughts saying that Islam is not the enemy but rather terrorism is. “It is a clash between hate and hope, and the vast majority of Muslims are on our side of the battle unless we drive them away.”
She went after the right-wing and flipped the troupe of attacking Muslims on its head calling it “scapegoating.”
Declaring war on Islam or demonizing the Muslim-American community is not only counter to our values, it plays right into the hands of terrorists.
Clinton is spot on. ISIS is trying to take over the Muslim faith and stop it from growing more mainstream and instead push it back into the Dark Ages when religion hated women and executed people for invented reasons. Just like the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem Witch Trials, Christianity didn’t become the violent religion some practiced. Islam doesn’t have to be either. But that’s exactly what ISIS wants it to be, and it’s what the right-wing wants it to be, too. Why is anyone’s guess, but it seems counter productive to keeping the world safe.
