The debate over the Confederate battle flag at the South Carolina statehouse have certainly been heated, with those who realize the flag is a symbol of hate and oppression facing off against “not-racists” who want to protect their “heritage” by leaving the flag on display.
“Our new government is founded… upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition, said Confederate “Vice President” Alexander Stephens said of their new “country” in 1861. “This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth…”
While this was the officially stated position of the Confederacy, flag fetishists constantly claim that the flag of the Confederacy is simply a representation of their “heritage” — though they are never quite clear on which “heritage” they are celebrating: That of treason, or of oppression, or both.
Sure, some flag advocates have been “outed” as KKK supporters, but the flag is absolutely not about hate. Nope.
Ever since white supremacist and Confederacy aficionado Dylann Roof embarked on a mission to murder a bunch of black people at a historic African-American church and spark a new Civil War, Americans have risen up in opposition of Roof’s favorite symbol of bigotry.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who once supported the Confederate flag’s presence in front of the statehouse, called for the removal of the flag last week. Haley was quickly joined by businesses across the country, who have promised not to sell the American equivalent of flags displaying the Swastika.
Dissatisfied that the logical action is taking far too long, Bree Newsome did something about it. The 30-year-old african-American woman climbed the 30-foot flagpole to remove the flag. She was halfway up when State Capitol police ordered her to come down, but the heroic woman continued to climb.
Newsome removed the flag from its perch before finally returning to the ground, where she was promptly arrested along with a male companion.
The flag was quickly raised again a short time later, just in time for a rally scheduled for Confederate flag supporters scheduled on Saturday.
Many are comparing this woman’s actions to those of civil rights heroes Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman, while others…Well, let’s see how readers of The Blaze reacted:
Remember, these are the same people who claim the flag is about “heritage,” not hate. What is truly disgusting is not that she was arrested — she expected and accepted that going into this. It’s that the flag was so quickly replaced. Can’t disappoint the bigots who planned to rally around it, after all.
When you think about it, this is probably the one place where a nonviolent and unarmed black woman did not risk getting shot — even Capitol police aren’t stupid enough to murder an African-American woman while she removes a symbol her her ancestors’ oppression.
