The whole world is reeling due to the fact that we are now living in the horror movie reality that Donald Trump will be America’s 45th president. He is quite possibly the most vulgar, bigoted, fraudulent, and mentally unstable individual to ever hold that office – and yet, here we are. However, this grim new situation that we now find ourselves in does have one silver lining: This is the end of the Republican Party’s reign as the party of so-called “values.”
The reason for this is simple: Donald Trump is everything they have been saying is too indecent to be allowed for decades. Trump is a thrice-married serial adulterer, who cheated on his first wife with his second wife, and on his second wife with his third wife, a tax cheat, an alleged sexual predator by his own admission, a serial liar, a con artist who refused to pay his debts, and just an all around morally bankrupt imbecile. Hell, his own church kicked him out early in the GOP primaries, and he couldn’t even name a Bible verse.
That’s just the beginning, too. The Republican Party always wants to wail and gnash their teeth when anyone accuses them of being a racist institution. Well, guess what? They can no longer say that they are not a racist institution, because the man they propelled to the White House has a literal white nationalist as his chief strategist and has made remarks that the Speaker of the House himself, Paul Ryan, described as, quote, “the textbook definition of a racist comment.” This is also the same man who said we should ban an entire religion from the nation, and refused to immediately disavow former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke and the terrorist organization he hails from. Despite all of this and so much more, the GOP still did all they could to elect Trump, and they succeeded. The idea of the GOP saying they aren’t a party of racists after this is downright laughable.
Further, look at the folks who have been Trump’s biggest cheerleaders – former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. They are both thrice married philanderers as well. Gingrich once gave one of his wives an ultimatum – either consent to an open marriage, or he’d divorce her. Oh, and then there was the time he delivered divorce papers to his wife who was in the hospital after cancer surgery. As for Giuliani? He had a scandalous, public affair as mayor, announced his impending divorce to the press before even telling his wife, and when his wife threw him out, who did he turn to? Why, a gay couple, that’s who. You know, those icky gays that the Republicans hate so much. Hell, he even dressed in drag.
So, in other words, Donald Trump and his closest toadies are everything the Republican Party has been saying would bring an end to society as we know it for decades. However, when it’s one of their own, they do everything they can to put a person who, by their own standards, has lived a morally reprehensible life in the most powerful position in the world. To that end, next time they start moaning about “family values,” and how LGBTQ rights, alternative marriages and relationships, transgender people in bathrooms, feminism, and abortions will ruin American society forever, we can all remind them that it’s Trump’s party now, and that means that they have absolutely zero claim on morals and values.
As scary as a Trump presidency is, this end to the GOP’s ability to claim some kind of moral authority over the rest of us is nothing short of delicious.
