The implosion of the GOP continues in full force as Republican Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska releases a bombshell on Facebook, writing that should Trump nab the nominee for president, he will seek a third party candidate to vote for. Calling Trump supporters “well-meaning,” Sasse writes:
I’m as frustrated and saddened as you are about what’s happening to our country. But I cannot support Donald Trump.
Please understand: I’m not an establishment Republican, and I will never support Hillary Clinton. I’m a movement conservative who was elected over the objections of the GOP establishment. My current answer for who I would support in a hypothetical matchup between Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton is: Neither of them. I sincerely hope we select one of the other GOP candidates, but if Donald Trump ends up as the GOP nominee, conservatives will need to find a third option.
Sasse dove into a tirade against the GOP frontrunner, assailing him for his “relentless focus is on dividing Americans,” tearing down barriers instead of building the people up, and his lack of Constitutional understanding:
The law is king, and the people are boss. But have you noticed how Mr. Trump uses the word “Reign” – like he thinks he’s running for King? It’s creepy, actually. Nebraskans are not looking for a king. We yearn instead for the recovery of a Constitutional Republic….So let me ask you: Do you believe the beating heart of Mr. Trump’s candidacy has been a defense of the Constitution? Do you believe it’s been an impassioned defense of the First Amendment – or an attack on it?
After explaining how he is not part of the establishment, how he supports term limits, and that he is tough on immigration, Sasse turned the tables on Trump for his past comments regarding First Amendment rights and freedom of speech. From his pledge to stricter libel laws to his now infamous take on the Tiananmen Square debacle, Sasse finished the trip down memory lane with, “If Donald Trump becomes the Republican nominee, my expectation is that I will look for some third candidate – a conservative option, a Constitutionalist.”
And finally, Sasse ends his critique of Trump with a reminder that the frontrunner will not condemn the KKK:
A presidential candidate who boasts about what he’ll do during his “reign” and refuses to condemn the KKK cannot lead a conservative movement in America.
Finally, a Republican willing to admit it all, fully and completely. This con artist is doing the exact same thing the Republicans accuse President Obama of doing. This Facebook post, while chiding Clinton and Obama, was exactly what needed to be said, and who better to say it than a non-establishment Republican senator? As a Trump candidacy becomes inevitable, Republicans are in full
Ben Sasse is a freshman, who has never held public office before. He currently serves with Republican Deb Fischer. So anyone who claims he’s part of “the establishment” (a loose term being thrown around this election season), is in serious denial. Trump, you’re turning off first timers because of your rhetoric.
