GOP Lawmaker Tries To Kill Bill By Making Its Effective Date ‘When Hell Freezes Over’

Wyoming Congressman Harlon Edmonds really, really hates the gays. Know how we know this? Well, a simple anti- discrimination bill made him get his knickers into such a twist that he tried to kill it by changing its “effective on” date from July 1, 2015 to “when hell freezes over.” No, really. I’m not kidding. As insane as it sounds, Congressman Edmonds really did do this.

Now, maybe, just maybe, it will be easier to understand why the good Congressman had such a problem with the bill, called Senate File 115, if you read an excerpt that illustrates the main point:

It is a discriminatory or unfair employment practice for an employer to refuse to hire, to discharge, to promote or demote, or to discriminate in matters of compensation or the terms, conditions or privileges of employment against, a qualified disabled person or any person otherwise qualified, because of age, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry or pregnancy.

So, in other words, it is the same non-discrimination practices the state of Wyoming, along with the rest of the nation, has been living by for decades without any sort of doom descending upon the nation, just with a couple of words added. In other words — nope, this dude doesn’t have any sort of point. He’s just an a*shole.

Apparently, Congressman Edmonds didn’t try to make his clever little change to Senate File 115 quietly, either. His protests came while the bill was being heard during a meeting of the Wyoming House’s Labor, Health, and Social Services committee. He also questioned why pedophilia wasn’t in the bill, as well, since sexual orientation and gender identity were, and was eventually told to leave the meeting by the chairwoman of the committee, Congresswoman Elaine Harvey.

The bill passed with a 6-2 vote, but Edmonds’ violently homophobic protests have been what drew the most attention, rather than the provisions in the bill itself.

Congressman Edmonds must really be upset now. After all, marriage equality is legal in Wyoming now, as well, and he was kicked out of the meeting by being such a raving bigot that people couldn’t get any work done. Let’s hope he continues to act like a lunatic all over the place and is asked to leave office altogether. Or maybe, he’ll just lose his mind next time he sees a rainbow flag blowing in the breeze.
