On Monday, Donald Trump’s campaign sent out a press release that said the Republican frontrunner would ban all Muslims from entering the United States if he were elected president:
Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”
The backlash was swift, with presidential candidates on both sides of the aisle denouncing Trump’s hate speech. Democratic candidate Martin O’Malley called Trump a “fascist,” and Republican candidates Jeb Bush called him “unhinged” while George Pataki said,” [Donald Trump’s] remarks are idiotic, next thing we will be banning loudmouth, racist billionaires.”
The best comment in response to Trump’s extreme bigotry and xenophobia, though, came from the Mayor of St. Petersburg, Florida:
I am hereby barring Donald Trump from entering St. Petersburg until we fully understand the dangerous threat posed by all Trumps.
— Rick Kriseman (@Kriseman) December 8, 2015
Even though Kriseman was just taking a jab at Trump, it’s pretty hilarious. The Tampa Bay Times reported that the mayor also said:
You make a ridiculous statement, so you answer with a ridiculous statement. There are some people who thought I was seriously going to ban Donald Trump from St. Petersburg, and that’s obviously not something I would try to do. But his statement was kind of ridiculous, so I thought that it deserved an equal response.

Trump is ridiculous, but what’s more ridiculous is that he has been able to get this far and hasn’t been laughed out of the race. He has campaigned solely on a platform of hate, and that is so appealing to the Republican base that he shot to number one and has stayed there. What the f*ck is wrong with this country?
I live in St.Petersburg’s neighboring city, and I think Kriseman’s comment towards Trump was so perfect that I’m going to go to his city and spend some money.
