Donald Trump’s son, Eric, managed to fit a great deal of his foot inside his mouth in a recent interview with The Stream’s James Robinson.
When asked why his father decided to run for president, Eric claimed he got the idea after being outraged that President Obama renamed the official White House Christmas tree the more generic “Holiday Tree.”
“[Trump] opens up the paper each morning and sees our nation’s leaders giving a hundred billion dollars to Iran, or he opens the paper and some new school district has just eliminated the ability for its students to say the pledge of allegiance, or some fire department in some town is ordered by the mayor to no longer fly the American flag on the back of a fire truck. Or, he sees the tree on the White House lawn has been renamed “Holiday tree” instead of “Christmas tree.” I could go on and on for hours.”
Eric added that his father was incredibly “selfless” to run for president to stop political correctness like this.
However, it was unlikely that Trump read about a holiday tree when he “opened the paper.” The renaming of the National Christmas tree is an urban legend started in chain letters that began being passed around the internet shortly after President Obama took office.
Snopes devoted an entire article to debunking it:
This item about the White House sending out letters stating that henceforth Christmas trees would be referred to as “Holiday trees” and spurning ornaments with religious themes originally circulated during the Obamas’ first Christmas in the White House in 2009 and popped up again in 2011 and again in 2013. It was false in 2009 and 2011, and is just as false in 2013.
In fact, the White House still continues to call the tree put up each year nearby the National Christmas Tree. (As TPM notes, the tree inside the White House is also still referred to as a “Christmas tree.”)
Here’s a photo of the Obama family standing in front of last year’s Christmas tree along with Santa Claus and Miss Piggy.
And here’s 2014’s tree. Can somebody slowly read the wagon sign to Eric Trump, please?
So if Donald Trump began his campaign on the pretext of making holiday trees Christmas trees again, then it looks like this whole thing was one giant misunderstanding. The only thing left to do is drop out, Mr. Trump. So long!
