Monday night, Richard Campbell, one of Trump’s “Deplorables” from Edisto Island, South Carolina, suckerpunched 69-year-old Shirley Teter in the face. But, like so many times before, the police decided not to arrest the Trump supporter for being a violent piece of trash.
The police’s inaction has become something of a standing joke/tragedy and one bystander was personally and professionally insulted by it. The man in a video released on Wednesday claims to be a 30 year veteran of the Chicago Police Department and can be seen just tearing into one of the Asheville officers:
“We did it (arrested a perpetrator) right away. Why don’t you?”
The officer he’s addressing reacts in a manner we’ve become all too familiar with: Heightened aggression and anger.
“Relax! We got it! Go over there and be quiet! We got it! Be quiet! We got it!”
All the while, the officer’s body language screams barely controlled fury at this older man committing one of America’s deadliest crimes: Disrespecting a cop.
None of this even slightly deters the veteran who calmly tells a second officer who had gently pushed him away that if he put his hands on him again, there’d be a problem. This enrages the already over-aggressive officer who eventually has to be pulled aside by yet another cop before he decided the veteran was “resisting arrest” and smashed his head into the ground.
The veteran responds by daring them to arrest him for not doing anything. It was pretty damn funny.
A much calmer and more professional cop then comes over and the Chicago veteran continues to dress them down for their lack of action before the video ends.
On the one hand, I love this video because cops all over the country have been allowing Trump supporters to push, slap and viciously beat people with little to no repercussions. They need to be held accountable, even if it’s on an informal, personal level.
On the other hand, with the way the first cop was barely restraining his rage, if the veteran had been younger and blacker, this video might have ended with an arrest. It’s frightening to see someone with a gun and a badge so close to the edge just from a simple criticism. There’s something terribly wrong with our police force.
