Donald Trump has declared the media the “enemy of the American people.” That is about the most un-American statement any president has ever made, but it’s Donald Trump, so of course he said it. Now, he has taken another step in his ongoing war with the press by announcing via Twitter that there will be no President Trump at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Trump’s tweet was polite, at least:
I will not be attending the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 25, 2017
Of course, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is a chance for media personalities – especially comedians – to roast the president, the government, each other, current events, and everything else. It’s a chance for everyone to let their hair down and have a good time, to come together as a nation. But, of course, Team Trump has decided that the media is the “opposition party,” and therefore will have nothing to do with them on any sort of friendly level.
The REAL issue here though, of course, is the elephant in the room: The fact that Trump is so thin-skinned. In fact, many people believe that the humiliating ridicule that he received at the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner is what made him want to become president. It wasn’t about governing – it was about revenge and his own ego. In fact, here is a video of Chuck Todd and Seth Meyers discussing that very theory:
Meyers even apologized for Trump, if indeed it was his act at that event that made Trump run and eventually win. Either way, this is a childish, vengeful, cowardly move on Trump’s part, and, once again, he shows that he should not be president.
