The 21st Century is still young but if you were to ask most people round the world who exemplifies evil, the overwhelming answer would have to be Dick Cheney. And it seems that Cheney is proud of his evil reputation, so proud that he’s embraced his nickname of “Darth Vader.”
When the Wall Street Journal asked Cheney about his reputation as a villain, he grinned and said, “remind me to show you the back of my truck. Darth Vader, I’m rather proud of that.”
And sure enough, he has a Darth Vader mask on the back of his truck.
This isn’t the first time the comparison has given him joy, although probably not as much as bombing the Middle East or torturing prisoners. In 2011, he told radio host Laura Ingraham that he “was honored” to be compared to the Star Wars villain.
He also said that in 2007:
‘I always had a soft spot for Darth Vader,’ Ingraham said, introducing Cheney. ‘He was the most interesting person, other than Chewbacca in the Star Wars series. . . c’mon.’
Cheney played along saying, ‘I love the music and Star Wars reference.’ He added, ‘I was honored to be compared to Darth Vader.’
Cheney embraced the nickname even while in office, telling an audience in 2007:
‘Most of you knew me long before anyone called me Darth Vader. I’ve been asked if that nickname bothers me, and the answer is, no. After all, Darth Vader is one of the nicer things I’ve been called recently.’

His daughters don’t seem to be too bothered by the reference either. In a speech in January, Mary Cheney told a group at American University, “I’m Darth Vader’s daughter.”
Jon Stewart was one of the people who most commonly and most appropriately used that reference, but after a while he said that the comparison was no good. Cheney was too evil. Here’s one from The Daily Show:
