General Barry McCaffrey told NBC News that after wider analysis, he has chosen to withdraw his support for Lt. General Michael Flynn, who Donald Trump tapped to be his national security advisor.
McCaffrey said that he took a closer look at Flynn’s social media accounts and discovered at least 16 different fake news or neocon propaganda stories which he labeled as “demented.”
Recently, the Trump transition team had faced some tough questions regarding its decision to grant a national security clearance to Michael G. Flynn, son of Gen. Flynn, when it was discovered that he was promoting fake news.
However, Gen. McCaffrey took the Lt. General to task for seeking security clearance for his son, especially when his own social media account containing potentially disqualifying posts that should prohibit the elder Flynn himself from obtaining security approval.
When cornered, Trump’s Vice President-elect Mike Pence ducked, dipped, dived, and dodged every question concerning how and why Flynn’s son was granted security clearance.
One of the fake stories that Flynn’s son promoted involved a D.C. pizzeria accused of being a front for a child sex slave ring led by Hillary Clinton.
The fake story made recent national headlines after a man from South Carolina decided to personally “investigate” the pizzeria while armed with an AR-15 rifle.
The man was arrested and taken into custody without incident.
General McCaffrey later told NBC News that:
“…We need to aggressively examine what was going on with General Flynn and his son dealing with these transparent, nearly demented tweets that were going out. I think it needs closer scrutiny.”
The General’s reservations should serve as a clear warning sign that Gen. Flynn’s involvement in the distribution of dangerous fake news stories should be used as a disqualifier for any advisory role to the president.
A national security advisor with a propensity for distributing “demented” lies could easily mislead America into another war.
General McCaffrey chose his country over ideology, and that’s why America is already great.
