Days After Orlando, Tennessee GOPer Says He’s Giving Away AR-15s As Fundraiser Door Prize

Just one day after the worst mass shooting in American history took the lives of 50 innocent people in Orlando, a Tennessee Republican is defending his disturbing decision to give away AR-15s as fundraiser door prizes despite the tragedy.

Rep. Andy Holt announced last week that he will be giving away one of the assault rifles during first annual “Hog Fest and Turkey Shoot.” For the record, this is the same style of gun used in the massacres that took place in Aurora, Newtown, and San Bernadino, and very similar to the one used in Orlando. Tasteless doesn’t even begin to describe it.

A turkey shoot is also scheduled for the June 25 fundraiser – attendees are encouraged to bring their own guns and ammo.

Holt says that even though the country is reeling in the wake of the Orlando shooting, he still believes that the gun used to kill dozens of innocent people in mere minutes should not be blamed.

It has nothing to do with the style of weapon,” said Holt “It has everything to do with who’s behind the weapon.

Holt has sponsored several pieces of pro-gun legislation, including a new law that allows full-time employees to carry guns on campus at colleges and universities.

According to Holt, assault rifles like the AR 15 can be used for many purposes, including hunting, target shooting and self-defense. Holt argued that an AR 15 is no different than any other assault rifle.(Which would be why so many Democrats are pushing for a ban on assault weapons, but I digress.)

He also said that the only problem with the AR 15 is that “it’s black and it looks real scary” adding, “If I beat somebody to death with a hammer that’s just a hammer. But if I was to take and wrap it up in electrical tape and make it black I guess that would make it an assault hammer.”

Apparently he has completely missed the fact that an “assault hammer” can’t blow away an entire room full of people within a matter of minutes.

It’s not about the gun.” Holt said. “It has everything to do with the position and condition of that person’s heart that’s behind the gun behind pulling the trigger.

When Holt was asked how you can tell the difference between the good and the bad someone is trying to purchase a weapon, his response basically amounted to “Don’t know. Don’t Care. Don’t take my guns!”

Ultimately we don’t know the answer to that question. But what we do know is that the vast majority of weapons that are used are not used for those unlawful purposes. They’re used for lawful purposes of defending one’s self.

Holt was then asked if he thought any changes needed to be made to the process of background checks. This ammosexual moron actually said that we need to weaken the background check system rather than strengthening it.

I believe there needs to be decreased amounts of that for lawful citizens. The Constitution is very clear that all Americans, all U.S. citizens, have the right to keep and bear arms.

Speaking of the shooter in Orlando, who had been questioned by the FBI three times regarding terroristic threats and ties to a suicide bomber, Holt said that he doesn’t think suspected terrorists should be able to legally purchase guns.

There were some very clear indicators — not once but twice or three times — this man had pledged himself to ISIS,” Holt said. “Guess what? If you do that, I don’t think you should have any guns.

He then fell back on the standard Republican argument that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Holt said the best way to stop a “crazed individual who is wielding a firearm” is to have armed citizens ready to take action if the need arises.

I would encourage everyone in the state of Tennessee today if they don’t have a firearm to go out and purchase one,” Hot said. “And if they have a firearm, go out and purchase another one to be trained in the execution of using that weapon in a dangerous situation.

Holt then said that he was “furious” that he had been asked about the AR-15 giveaway, but was not questioned about “how many extra firearms I’ll be handing out to ensure people can protect themselves. After all, it was a bullet that stopped the terrorist.”

I want you to arm yourselves and learn to shoot with deadly accuracy should the need arise,” Holt declared. “Protect your family. Protect yourselves. Protect your friends. Our government has made it quite clear that it is incapable of doing so. At the end of the day, it’s your responsibility anyways.

In response to the outrage over his choice to hand out an assault-style rifle following the tragedy in Orlando, Holt tweeted that he was now going to give away two AR-15s at the event.

It is impossible to listen to these right wing nut jobs and their love for the guns that take innocent American lives without asking yourself WTF is wrong with these people. I mean, seriously. What. The. Actual. Fuck. No one in America should be permitted to own a gun that can take 50 innocent lives in minutes. Period.
