Oklahoma lawmakers are attempting to pass a list of revolting anti-LGBTQ laws that are so cruel and sadistic, they will almost cost gay children their lives.
Republican Rep. Sally Kern, who is known for her declaration that gays are more dangerous than terrorists, sponsored a list of anti-gay bills that would keep LGBTQ teens from receiving counseling from gay-friendly counselors and would also protect conversion therapy, including aversion therapy, which has long been discredited.
According to Slate, it is a well-known fact that gay teens, especially those raised in anti-gay homes, are at a drastically increased risk of depression and suicide. “Gay-affirming” therapists and LGBTQ groups are a “critical lifeline” for these kids, but House Bill 3044 “would rip away this lifeline.”
This bill expressly prohibits a public school “counselor, therapist, social worker, administrator, teacher or other individual” from referring a student under the age of eighteen” to any type of “individual, organization or entity” if the referral in any way “pertain[s] to human sexuality.”
Counselors who work in public schools wouldn’t even be able to “provide the contact information, business card, brochure or other informational materials” of any organization that is considered gay-friendly. This bill would thus leave LGBTQ teens without anywhere to turn.
Another bill included in the legislation sanctions conversion therapy, stating specifically that mental health professionals are allowed to participate in “sexual orientation change efforts” with patients, even if they are under the age of 18 and are being forced into therapy against their will by their parents.
In addition, while not legalizing aversion therapy, it does make absolutely sure that aversion therapy is not made illegal and is considered an acceptable way to change a patient’s sexual orientation. House bill 1598 then describes what kinds of sadistic methods may be involved in this treatment:
’Aversion therapy’ means any counseling by a mental health provider that exposes or asks a client or patient to undergo physical pain, such as electroshock or electroconvulsive therapy, touch therapy, pornography exposure or vomit-induction therapy, in order to change sexual behaviors or gender-identity expressions and/or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same sex.
How conservative legislators can rationalize to themselves that showing a child porn while electrocuting them into convulsions is the best form of therapy for LGBTQ youth compared to the evils of gay-friendly affirmation is a mystery, but one thing is certain, if these measures pass, lives will be lost.
The legislation also includes a bill that would prohibit any person who tests positive for HIV from getting married, which in addition to being a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, is also unconstitutional as the Supreme Court has declared marriage to be a fundamental human right.
