While Republicans drum up what they do best – fear – Condoleezza Rice, perhaps in a state of guilt for destabilizing an entire region, called on the governors to let the refugees in, despite security concerns.
Not only did Rice call on the U.S. to be “open and welcoming” to the refugees, she did so to the face of Alabama’s Governor, Robert Bentley (R), who refused to accept them into his state:
I fundamentally understand that you in a position of authority, like you, governor and others, in addition to having compassion for others, you have to be safety conscious for your people. What the United States has done is to be open to people who are fleeing tyranny, who are fleeing danger, but we have done it in a very careful way that has worked for us.
Bentley is among thirteen governors who have pledged to refuse refugees into their states, saying he will not “stand complicit to a policy that places the citizens of Alabama in harm’s way.”
There’s a little itty-bitty problem with the Republican governor’s xenophobic refusal: it’s completely unconstitutional, and there’s absolutely no way they could enforce it.
So not only are Governors Robert Bentley, Doug Ducey (AZ), Bobby Jindal (LA), Greg Abbott (TX), John Kasich (OH), Rick Scott (FL), Pat McCory (NC), Phil Bryant (MS), Scott Walker (WI), Bruce Raunner (IL), Mike Pence (IN), Charlie Baker (MA) scared, xenophobic chicken-hawks, they have failed civics 101.
Once again it’s all PR talk and no real action from the GOP.
Rice’s comments seem to be tactful after it was revealed by ex-CIA director George Tenet that President Bush and his administration ignored even more warnings of an impending attack (which turned out to be 9/11) because he didn’t want to leave a paper trail.
Condoleezza Rice may have been the worst National Security Advisor to ever hold office, and she may have been a mediocre Secretary of State at best, but the fear-mongering Republicans need to listen to her on this point. Rice has been mum on making comments regarding current foreign policy. So Republicans, take this comment from the former secretary seriously.
When it comes to America’s moral compass, six former Republican and Democtratic Secretaries of State – Henry Kissinger, James Baker, Madeline Albright, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, Hillary Clinton, and current Sec. John Kerry all agree: let the refugees in already!
