Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski has been unemployed for less than a week and he has already landed his very next job: Working as a salaried “political commentator” for CNN. The move is insulting on a number of levels but most notably because the former Trump employee is a monster.
Lewandowski is best known as the man who repeatedly assaulted reporters while working for Trump, including very famously shoving a CNN reporter during a rally. He was also so monumentally bad at his job that Donald Trump was forced by his own children to fire him and have him escorted out of Trump Tower by security.
Apart from occasionally assaulting reporters for asking Donald Trump serious questions, Lewandowski is also known as a prolific sexist. Female reporters have come forward to say he has sexually harassed them at various times. And Trump’s campaign has relatively few women working for it, but the ones that do learned of Lewandowski’s obnoxiousness intimately. Hope Hicks, Donald Trump’s communications director, was once left sobbing after a livid Lewandowski screamed into her face, “You made a big f***ing mistake; you’re f***ing dead to me.” He seems nice.
He also has a habit of assaulting reporters for doing their jobs. One such victim was CNN’s own employee.
At a press conference earlier this month in West Palm Beach, Florida, Lewandowski physically pushed CNN reporter Noah Gray away from Trump as he tried to ask the candidate a question, according to a source with close knowledge of the incident.
It was not the first time the campaign manager had gotten in Gray’s face to prevent him from reporting. In November, when the reporter attempted to film protesters who were disrupting a Trump rally, Lewandowski threatened to pull his credentials unless he went back inside the pen the campaign uses to corral journalists.
What could a sexist, violent Trump fanatic possibly offer the network? Other than being associated with Trump, not much. In fact, thanks to a strict non-disclosure agreement with Donald Trump, he can’t even provide insight into what went on in the Trump campaign. He is legally barred from criticizing Donald Trump and CNN is giving him a salary. As Think Progress noted, Lewandowski admittedly signed an NDA before joining Trump’s campaign and a portion of that standard document includes a clause on “disparagement.”
No Disparagement. During the term of your service and at all times thereafter you hereby promise and agree not to demean or disparage publicly the Company, Mr. Trump, any Trump Company, any Family Member, or any Family Member Company or any asset any of the foregoing own, or product or service any of the foregoing offer, in each case by or in any of the Restricted Means and Contexts and to prevent your employees from doing so.
In other words, CNN hired a pro-Trump hack who legally cannot disagree with his former boss and will likely serve only to parrot that same former boss’s talking points. His benefit to intelligent debate is less than zero.
It’s safe to say that even CNN’s own employees are the most offended by this bone-headed hire. Lately, journalists at the network like Anderson Cooper, Kate Bolduan, and Jake Tapper have made a concerted effort to call Trump out on his rampant lies. After months of giving Trump a free pass in the press, journalists were finally standing up to him. The tides were turning. Hiring Trump’s right-hand man and putting him next to them is an insult to their integrity and could seriously harm those efforts to hold Trump accountable for the things he says.
CNN, which is often accused of chasing sensationalism rather than facts, just proved the haters right.
