A CNN dive into Donald Trump’s baffling decision to hire Breitbart’s owner, Stephen Bannon, as the new head of his campaign, went gloriously off the rails when they decided to include Ben Shapiro as a guest.
Shapiro has some bad blood with both Trump (whom he hates) and Breitbart News (where he recently resigned). Shapiro is a conservative writer not without faults, but he recently found himself on the side of angels when he took a stand against his employer’s rank sexism. Both Shapiro and his former colleague Michelle Fields left the alt-right sewerage dump after Trump’s (then) campaign manager Corey Lewandowski assaulted Fields at a rally and the website threw her under the bus to better support the Republican candidate. In his resignation letter, Shapiro didn’t hold back.
Breitbart News, under the chairmanship of Steve Bannon, has put a stake through the heart of Andrew’s legacy. In my opinion, Steve Bannon is a bully, and has sold out Andrew’s mission in order to back another bully, Donald Trump[.]
So CNN surely knew they were playing with fire when they asked Shapiro to give his thoughts about Trump’s decision to hire Bannon as his new right-hand man. It went about as well as can be expected.

After CNN host Brianna Keilar floats the (preposterous) idea that Trump may be able to turn around his campaign by simply being more presidential, Shapiro pointed out the inconvenient truth: Trump is pathologically unable to do so. He’s a man so consumed with narcissism and uncontrollable impulses that asking him to simply “change” is a fantasy. Shapiro sprinkled in some hilarious descriptions of Trump, as well.
I mean as you probably know, I think Trump is a turd tornado, but I also understand that he has no capacity whatsoever to control himself and be the sort of staid politician that so many people want him to be.
A disbelieving Keilar stops the interview to clarify what Shapiro just said: “A what tornado?”
Shapiro delivers a deadpan explanation:
A turd tornado… Like a sharknado except with poop.
The 2016 election is very strange.
