Jeb Bush has a dream. And that dream includes an America that blocks Syrian refugees who aren’t Christian.
I wonder how long it’ll take before people like Bush to realize they’re playing directly into ISIS’ hands by making these sorts of decrees.
. . . [W]e should focus our efforts as it relates to the Christians.
While sitting across from Jake Tapper on Sunday’s edition of State of the Union, Bush offered his updated immigration plan, in wake of the recent tragedy in Paris:
As it relates to the refugees, I think we need to do thorough screen. And take a limited number. But ultimately, the best way to deal with the refugee crisis is to create safe zones inside of Syria so that people don’t risk their lives, and you don’t have what will be a national security challenge for both our country and for Europe of screening.
At least he acknowledges that the Muslims in Syria are fleeing to the United States to get away from ISIS, not because they support it, by mentioning safe zones. Points for acknowledging the obvious, which is more than what most mouth-breathing conservatives have done lately.
Bush, however, was willing to make exceptions for one population of refugees:
There are a lot of Christians in Syria that have no place now. They’ll be either executed or imprisoned, either by Assad or by ISIS. And I think we should have — we should focus our efforts as it relates to the Christians that are being slaughtered.
And when Tapper wondered how screeners would know which refugees were Christians and which ones were terrorists claiming to be Christians to get through, Bush pointed that we apparently do this “all the time” and that we need to be “very, very cautious.” He added it “calls to mind” the “need to protect” our southern border.
It’s a “threat against Western civilization,” Bush said, and the United States needs to take the lead:
This is a threat against Western civilization, and we need to lead. The United States has pulled back and when we pull back, voids are filled. And they’re filled now by Islamic terrorism that threatens our country.
Great Western civilizations don’t fall from without. Rome didn’t fall because of the Vandals, Rome fell in large part due to strife and infighting. It wasn’t the Spartans that destroyed Athens during the Peloponnesian War, it was Athens’ own stupidity in invading Sicily that did the job.
Radical Islamic extremists won’t — they can’t — destroy Western civilization. And that’s because Western civilization is a set of memes: equality, fairness and fellowship towards every one of all races, creeds, sexual orientations, sexual identities and ethnic groups.
And by turning our backs on those Enlightenment principles, like Bush is advocating for here, we damage it in ways ISIS can only dream of.
