Pamela Geller is a rabid anti-Muslim right-winger, prone to hyperbole. The woman is always scared of something and will even make stuff up (like the “Draw Mohammed” event last year)so she can panic about it. Take her visit with St. Louis radio host Jamie Allman on Wednesday (please).
Geller is freaking out about something that she made up completely: Hillary Clinton will impose “the Sharia” and close down Breitbart.com. How did she get there? It’s complicated, meaning it involves really listening and really reading, two things at which Geller is abysmal.
First, the really listening. Secretary of State John Kerry was in Bangladesh on Monday and held a press conference there. This is the one thing Geller heard and built upon:
“… if you decide one day you’re going to be a terrorist and you’re willing to kill yourself, you can go out and kill some people. You can make some noise. Perhaps the media would do us all a service if they didn’t cover it quite as much. People wouldn’t know what’s going on.” (my emphasis)
To Geller, this was the “language of the conquered.” How did she get that out of extending a practice that is already in place with many media outlets when it comes to mass shooters? Both shooters and terrorists want the publicity. To “make some noise.” If the terrorists are denied that, they are denied a reason to carry out attacks in the West. It’s logic so, of course, Geller doesn’t understand.
Now to the lack of reading comprehension. Hillary Clinton sent out an email last week after Breitbart CEO Steve Bannon was ensconced as Trump’s new campaign chair. In the email, Clinton points out that Breitbart bears more than normal scrutiny because of this partnership. She never suggests that it be shut down.
“Now, we’ve had a conservative media in this country for a while. I don’t always like what they have to say, but I respect their role and their right to exist. Breitbart is something different. They make Fox News look like a Democratic Party pamphlet. They’re a different breed altogether — not just conservative but radical, bigoted, anti-Muslim, anti-Semitic conspiracy peddlers who never have been and never should be anywhere near the levers of power in this country. But Donald Trump just gave them a broad new mandate to shape his campaign…” (again, emphasis mine)
Do you see any indication that Clinton is even considering shutting Breitbart down? No, because it’s not there. Geller reads what she wants and then expands upon that. She tells Allman that, added to Kerry’s remarks…
“… last week’s declaration in an email from Hillary Clinton that she’s going to shut down, for example, the number one conservative website, Breitbart, which as you know I write for, I mean, this is the Sharia, this is totalitarianism, this is very frightening. And what’s even more frightening is that the media’s not talking about it because they’re marching in lockstep, Jamie.”
In an election full of projection from the right, this is one of the most egregious we’ve seen. Clinton is not going to shut Breitbart down. She is not going to set up a totalitarian regime. The idea of Sharia came from Geller’s deep-seated fear and hatred of Muslims. If she would bother to read the Constitution she might grasp the idea that this is utter nonsense.
But someone has threatened to muzzle the media and it’s Geller’s candidate. Last February, Donald Trump said he would target the media and journalists. He was specifically attacking the New York Times and Washington Post but he said that he would “open up libel laws” so that “we can sue” anyone who writes a negative article about him.
This is a hollow threat, of course. Neither Trump nor Clinton can shut down a media outlet simply because they write something that candidate (or President) doesn’t like. If that could happen, Pres. Obama could have shut down dozens of sites. Sites that actually are breaking libel laws.
Pamela Geller is a frightened child whose particular bogeyman is Islam. Everything she hears and reads is filtered through her fear. I’d pity her if she weren’t such a vitriolic shrew. As it is, I think ridicule and mockery will do nicely. Grow up, Pamela.
