I don’t know if I should be depressed or delighted about this. The New York Times reports that Republicans are so intellectually bankrupt that the best they could come up with for their big convention is Benghazi and Bill Clinton’s sex life:
There are plans to emphasize different themes each night of the convention. Mr. Trump wants to touch on a few of his favorite hot-button issues, like the 2012 attack on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, former President Clinton’s infidelities and border security.
Think about that; the Republican Party, one of the two major political parties in the United States, can’t think of any reason for people to vote Republican other than hating Hillary Clinton and her husband. That does not bode well for the future of our democracy if one party is this badly broken.
Even worse, they’re actually kicking off the entire convention with Benghazi, the conspiracy that Republicans have already publicly debunked. And not just once, they debunked it seven times with seven different investigations that lasted 4 years, cost millions of dollars and produced nothing but bogus talking points to attack Clinton with.
The convention is supposed to jazz up the base so expect to see pretty much every single Benghazi lie get a turn in the spotlight. Conservatives already live in an alternate reality where Hillary is guilty of high treason so they’ll eat it up like candy.
But that silliness will pale in comparison to the wailing and gnashing of teeth about Bill Clinton’s sex life. If no one wonders out loud if it’s legal to impeach the first husband, I will be quite surprised.
Never mind that their presumptive nominee is on his third wife, has spent decades bragging about all the women he’s slept with, is proud that he cheats on his wives and has several credible rape cases being brought against him. Nope. Ignore ALL of that because Bill got a BJ in the Oval Office so that makes his wife unfit for office. Or something.
Please don’t spend any time trying to wrap your head around that one, you might sprain your brain.
The bottom line is that if THIS is the best the Republicans can come up with, Donald Trump is in even more trouble than we originally thought.
