Political commentator and actor Ben Stein has a history of being connected to the Republican party that goes back close to 50 years. While he is probably most famous for his tv show, “Win Ben Stein’s Money,” and his role as the most boring teacher on earth in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (“Anybody? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?”) Stein got his start as a speechwriter for Richard Nixon. He has raised the ire of liberals throughout the years, particularly during the presidency of Barack Obama, with his commentaries and critiques on liberal proposals and policies. The man’s track record proves that he is well to the right of center.
Stein has now become the latest celebrity with GOP connections to announce that he will not vote for Donald Trump.
In an interview with CNN’s Carol Costello, Stein says that he likes both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
I went to law school with Ms. Clinton so I’ve always had a kind of fondness for her, she was always a very nice young woman… I admire the fact that Bernie Sanders has a single-payer national health plan.
Yes, you read that right. A Republican saying that he supports single payer health care. Stein then reminds everyone that universal health coverage was proposed by “socialist” Richard Nixon.
When I worked for Mr. Nixon as a speechwriter, I wrote the message that sent up Mr. Nixon’s proposal for single-payer health plan.
One of the things that makes Stein’s announcement so big is that he is not saying that he will hold his nose and vote against Trump — he is actually praising the two Democrats in the race. To drive home just how big his endorsement of Sanders and Clinton is, he says:
I’ve never voted for a Democrat.
Still, he is rather charitable towards Trump, who he calls “misinformed.”
But Mr. Trump, I think, is dangerously misinformed. I like him, but he’s dangerously misinformed.
In case you are wondering, yes, this is the same Ben Stein who has been one of President Obama’s harshest critics. It is the same man who said that the president “hates America” and “does not wish America well.” Ben Stein is no liberal. But he isn’t crazy, nor is he stupid and he isn’t going to vote for Donald Trump.
