Most of the sane element of our nation, even on the GOP side of the aisle, have come to the realization that the LGBT community is a legitimate part of society, not a gang of immoral mutants to be “stopped” from being who they are or even existing. But Scott Lively, a leading fundamentalist Christian anti-gay activist, apparently still isn’t part of that sane group.
If you aren’t familiar with Lively’s act, here is a brief rundown of who he is: He is in charge of several right wing groups including Abiding Truth Ministries, a right wing “Christian” organization based in Temecula, California. He was the state director of the California branch of the American Family Association and a spokesman for the Oregon Citizens Alliance. Lively has called for the criminalization of “the public advocacy of homosexuality” as far back as 2007 and is directly involved in anti-gay legislation in Uganda. His mission is to stop any and all legislation that deals with gay people not being discriminated against. And unlike others who are “evolving” on the issue, Lively seems to be going the opposite way.
In an op-ed column published by leading right wing outlets including World Net Daily and BarbWire, Lively takes the tact of bullying as being the only way to get his way on the issue of two gay people in love being married. In his article, Lively argues that the only way to stop the legalization of gay marriage is to form an “angry mob” that will take to “the streets, pitchforks and torches held aloft, ready to tear down Frankenstein’s castle with their bare hands if need be.”
But Lively even goes further than to just threaten. He actually suggests that “gayness” is some sort of “elite conspiracy” designed to ruin everything he holds dear:
The only way to deter the elites is with the threat of the mob. They need to see the pitchforks and torches to know they’ve gone too far and need to back down. That’s where we are today in America. The elites want to eliminate the natural family to create a better class of serfs: state-bred children for the factories and the battlefield — easier to control, dulled by drugs and sexual promiscuity … and bread and circuses.
Oh, but wait — there’s more. Lively doesn’t stop with mere bullying and just one conspiracy theory before circling back to his revolutionary theme:
The battle today is for marriage, the core of the natural family. Every human being on this planet will be harmed if the elites are allowed to destroy it by mutation. It is no different than Monsanto destroying natural foods or seeds by mutating their DNA, or Big Pharma destroying bodies by flooding the health industry with artificial, often poisonous “remedies.” Our common paradigm in the grassroots for guiding society should be natural vs artificial across the board, including natural marriage and family: rejecting the counterfeit alternatives to the self-evident design of our ecology — and our physiology.
The natural family is the ecosystem of humanity! It must be preserved at all costs.
How? By a populist uprising!
And of course, what rabble rousing would be complete without some Jesus talk?
For Christians it’s Jesus and the money-changers time! Making a whip of cords like He did with His own hands, and letting these arrogant puppet masters know we mean to use it.
The radical right wingers are clearly so beyond desperate that they would need to catch a crosstown bus to get back to desperate. The only question that remains is whether these ‘bullies for Jesus” will be permitted to use their torches and pitchforks to torture and injure or will the majority of decent citizens continue to stand up for fair and equal treatment for all LGBT Americans? And if some are naive enough to think that these are just idle threats from some delusional “Christians” they might need to be reminded that this is the same group that has blown up abortion clinics and killed doctors to try to terrorize America into doing things their way.
